NO START CONDITION, GENERATOR MAY NOT BE CHARGING BATTERY

SUBJECT: NO START CONDITION, GENERATOR MAY NOT BE CHARGING BATTERY (CHECK WIRE/WIRE ROUTING; REROUTE/REPAIR WIRE)

MODELS: 1997 BUICK SKYLARK 1997 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA 1997 PONTIAC GRAND AM WITH 3100 ENGINE (VIN M - RPO L82)

BUILT WITH THE FOLLOWING VIN BREAKPOINTS:

LANSING (M PLANT): PONTIAC SOP THROUGH VM509062 OLDSMOBILE SOP THROUGH VM305629 LANSING (C) PLANT: PONTIAC SOP THROUGH VC151357 BUICK SOP THROUGH VC418527

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON A VEHICLE "NO START" CONDITION, OR THE GENERATOR MAY NOT BE CHARGING THE BATTERY.

CAUSE:

CONDITION MAY BE DUE TO A MIS-ROUTED AND PINCHED WIRE FROM THE GENERATOR TO THE ENGINE HARNESS. THE WIRE MAY BE MIS-ROUTED UNDER THE GENERATOR REAR BRACE AND POWER STEERING RETURN LINE. THE PINCHED WIRE MAY LOSE INSULATION RESULTING IN A NO-CHARGE CONDITION AND/OR CAUSE FUSIBLE LINK G TO OPEN RESULTING IN A NO-START CONDITION.

CORRECTION:

CHECK THE WIRE AND WIRE ROUTING BEFORE REPLACING THE GENERATOR.

1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

2. LOOSEN THE REAR BRACE NUT ATTACHED TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND REMOVE THE BOLT AT THE REAR OF THE GENERATOR. REFER TO SECTION 6D3 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

3. REMOVE THE GENERATOR AIR DUCT COVER.

4. REMOVE GENERATOR POSITIVE B RING TERMINAL WIRE AND REROUTE IT OVER THE LOOSENED REAR BRACE AND OVER THE POWER STEERING RETURN LINE.

5. REPAIR WIRE IF THE INSULATION IS DAMAGED AND REINSTALL TO THE GENERATOR. REFER TO PAGE 8A-5-4 IN THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR WIRING REPAIR INFORMATION.

6. REINSTALL THE GENERATOR AIR COOLING SYSTEM AND TIGHTEN THE REAR BRACE BOLT AND NUT TO 25 N.M (18 LB FT).

IF THERE IS WIRE DAMAGE, INSPECT FUSIBLE LINK G AND REPLACE IF NECESSARY. FUSIBLE LINK G IS THE GRAY WIRE AT THE FRONT OF THE STARTER. REFER TO PAGE 8A-5-2 IN THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR FUSIBLE LINK REPLACEMENT INFORMATION.
