Removal Procedure

  1. Open the rear compartment lid.

  2. Object Number: 169050  Size: SH
  3. Remove the shock absorber upper cover.
  4. Important: Remove one shock absorber (3) at a time, if both shock absorbers are to be replaced.

  5. Remove the upper shock absorber attaching nut (5).
  6. Raise the vehicle on the hoist and support the rear axle (1) with adjustable jack stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  7. 4.1. When lifting the vehicle with the body hoist, it will be necessary to support the rear axle with adjustable jack stands.
    4.2. When lifting the vehicle with the suspension hoist, care should be taken to align the axle on the hoist prior to lifting.
  8. Remove the shock absorber nut (5).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the shock absorbers at the lower attachment.
  2. Install the nut (5) and hand tighten.
  3. Orient the lower attachment tab (4) toward the rear of the car.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Lower the vehicle enough to guide the upper stud through the body opening and install the upper shock absorber attaching the nut loosely.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the shock absorber lower mounting nuts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  7. Remove the axle support and lower the vehicle all the way and then tighten the shock absorber upper nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the upper shock absorber mounting nut to 29 N·m (21 lb ft).

  9. Replace the shock absorber upper cover.
