    Object Number: 182078 Size: SH

    Caution: To avoid personal injury:

       • Do not allow the repair material to come in contact with skin or eyes and avoid breathing vapors.
       • Do not use near sparks or open flame.

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Important: All the materials needed for the rear window defogger grid line repair are included in the rear defogger repair kit GM P/N 12346001. You may use an equivalent repair material.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Clean the grid line repair area.
  3. Buff the repair area using a cloth dampened with denatured alcohol.
  4. Buff and clean about 6 mm (0.25 in) beyond each side of the break in the grid line.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the grid line repair decal or 2 strips of tape positioned above and below the repair.
  2. You must use the repair decal or tape in order to control the width of the repair area.

If a decal is used, ensure that a die-cut metering slot is the same width as the grid line.

  3. Mix the grid repair area until a uniform color appears.
  4. Ensure that the window is at room temperature.

  5. Object Number: 182078 Size: SH
  6. Apply the repair material to the repair area using a small, plastic paddle or the equivalent.
  7. Ensure that you overlap both ends of the grid line.

  8. Carefully remove the decal or the tape.
  9. The grid line repair material may be cured using heat. In order to avoid heat damage to the interior trim, protect the trim near the repair area.

  10. Use a heat gun to apply heat to the repair area for 2-3 minutes.
  11. Hold the heat gun nozzle 25 mm (1 in) from the surface.

A minimum temperature of 50°C (200°F) is necessary.

  12. Inspect the grid line repair area for appearance. If the repair appears discolored, use a pipe cleaner or a fine brush to apply a coating of iodine to the repair area.
  13. Allow the iodine to dry for about 30 seconds. Carefully wipe off any excess iodine with a lint-free cloth.

  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
  15. Test the defogger operation in order to verify the grid line repair.
  16. Allow at least 24 hours for a complete curing of the repair material. Do not physically disturb the repair area for 24 hours.
