Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement Disc Brake

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 37043 Parking Brake Cable Release Tool


    Object Number: 479671  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Disconnect the rear brake cable at the connector (1).

  3. Object Number: 177172  Size: SH
  4. Remove the cable from the mounting bracket.

  5. Object Number: 479652  Size: SH
  6. Remove the parking brake cable retaining clip (1).
  7. Disconnect the cable (2) from the actuator lever.
  8. Remove the parking brake cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 479652  Size: SH
  1. Place the cable in position.
  2. Install the cable on the actuator lever.
  3. Install the parking brake cable retaining clip (1).

  4. Object Number: 479671  Size: SH
  5. Install the cable to the cross member.
  6. Connect the rear brake cable at the equalizer (3).
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Adjust the parking brake. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment .

Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement Drum Brake

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    •  J 37043 Parking Brake Release
    •  J 38400 Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Removal

    Object Number: 175008  Size: SH
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Disconnect the left rear park brake cable (1) from the equalizer (2) and connector.

  3. Object Number: 486685  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the cable (3) from the bracket (4) using the J 37043 .

  5. Object Number: 176311  Size: SH
  6. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  7. Remove the brake drums.
  8. Remove the brake shoes (1). Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  9. Disconnect the cable from the park brake lever (7).
  10. Remove the cable from the backing plate (5) using the J 37043 .

Installation Procedure

Notice: Parking brake adjustment is not necessary. This is a self adjusting system and damage may result from attempting to adjust or modify this system in any way. It may be necessary to adjust the rear brakes to obtain the proper tension in the system.

  1. Connect the cable to the backing plate (5).
  2. Connect the cable to the park brake lever (7).
  3. Install the brake shoes (1). Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  4. Install the brake drums.
  5. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

  6. Object Number: 486685  Size: SH
  7. Connect the cables (3) to the bracket (4).

  8. Object Number: 175008  Size: SH
  9. Connect the cable (1) to the equalizer (2) and connector.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
