Subject: | Front Carpet Wet (Replace Water Deflector) |
Models: | 1999-2000 Oldsmobile Alero |
| 1999-2000 Pontiac Grand Am |
This bulletin is being revised to update the model year information
and the correction procedure. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 83-16-10
(Section 10 -- Body).
Condition
Some customers may comment that the front or rear carpet is wet.
Cause
Figure 1
A possible cause may be the front
door water deflectors. A molded pocket and three round pockets were installed
in the water deflectors to accommodate door hardware. This pocket, over a
period of time, may cause the water deflectors to wrinkle at the bottom of
the doors and create a water leak. Refer to (2) in Figure 1.
Correction
Inspection
- Remove the door trim pad.
- Inspect the door water deflector. Determine if the deflector is
first or second design. The first design has a molded pocket and three round
pockets at the bottom of the door. Refer to (1) in Figure 1. If the water
deflector is the first design, replace it using the procedure listed below.
- If the deflector is second design, check the "wet out"
of the butyl bead at the bottom and perimeter of the door. The adhesive bead
must be consistently stuck to the door inner panel with no skips or voids.
If skips and voids are present, it is likely that the door inner panel surface
is contaminated. Replace the water deflector using the procedure listed below.
Also, whenever service is performed causing the water deflector to be disturbed,
the deflector must then be properly sealed to the door inner panel in order
to prevent water leaks.
Procedure
- Adhesive surface must be clean, dry and free of dirt or contaminants.
Clean the door surface (around the perimeter of the water deflector) with
one of the cleaners listed below, or equivalent.
• | 3Mâ„¢ General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, P/N 08984 |
• | Dominion Sure Seal, Sure Solve Stock BSS |
| Important: The door surface must be at room temperature or the adhesive will not
stick.
|
- Install the water deflector to the inner panel. Start with the
upper corners of the deflector and align the locating holes in the deflector
to the holes in the door inner panel at the RH and LH upper corners.
- Pull the harness connectors through their respective holes or
slits.
- Position the outer perimeter of the deflector to the door inner
panel by working from the bottom center outward. Make sure the butyl adhesive
is below the drain holes.
- Using a 50.8 mm (2 in) wallpaper roller, roll out
the butyl adhesive. Start at the bottom center and work outboard, up the right
and left sides. A 50.8 mm (2 in) roller can be purchased at
a hardware or wallpaper store.
