Oil Filter Adapter and Bypass Valve Assembly Replacement for Pontiac Grand Am 2003

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.



2. Drain the oil.
3. Remove the oil filter.
4. Verify that the gasket is removed with the filter.



5. Remove the oil filter adapter.

Important: Do not pry against the threads in the oil filter bypass hole when removing the bypass valve.

6. Remove the oil filter bypass valve using a screwdriver or a punch in order to pry the valve out.
7. Clean the oil filter mounting surface.

1. Install the oil filter bypass valve. Seat the valve using a socket of the same diameter and a mallet.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

2. Install the oil filter adapter.

Tighten
Tighten the adapter to 39 N·m (29 lb ft).




3. Set the gasket in place and install the filter. Turn the filter ¾-1  complete turn after the gasket contacts the surface of the block.
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Start the vehicle and test for leaks.
