Subject: | Seat Belt Light Stays On or Flickers After Seat Belt Is Buckled (Repair Harness) |
Models: | 2003 Pontiac Grand Am |
Some customers may comment that the seat belt light that stays on, or flickers on and off, after the driver's seat belt is buckled.
This condition may be caused by the seat belt wiring harness chafing on the seat pan. The seat pan has a metal band that wraps around the base of the seat bottom. This metal band may have an unprotected edge that can come in contact with the seat belt wiring harness when the seat is moved back and forth. This chafing may occur on the seat belt wiring harness about 25 mm (1 in) past where it exits the plastic sleeve on the seat belt buckle.
To correct this condition and to avoid a repeat occurrence, place a layer of protective tape on the vertical edge of the seat pan metal band. Repair the seat belt buckle wiring harness and route the buckle harness away from the metal edge. Use electrical tape to wrap and protect the harness area in which the damage initially occurred. If the wiring harness damage cannot be repaired, replace the seat belt buckle assembly.
