THIS INFORMATION WILL REDUCE THE TIME REQUIRED TO PURGE AIR FROM THE INJECTION PUMP WHICH REDUCES STARTING TIME. WHEN CHANGING THE FUEL FILTER OR WHEN THE CAR HAS RUN OUT OF FUEL, DISCONNECT THE CONNECTOR FROM THE TEMPERATURE SWITCH AND JUMPER CONNECTOR TERMINALS. THIS WILL AID IN PURGING AIR FROM THE PUMP. (THIS PROCEDURE IS NECESSARY ONLY ON A HOT ENGINE, AS THE CIRCUIT WILL ALWAYS BE CLOSED WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD). REDUCING CRANKING TIME-DIESEL ENGINES WHEN REPLACING A FUEL FILTER, INJECTION PUMP, OR WHEN THE CAR HAS BEEN RUN OUT OF FUEL ON 1981 AND 1982 MODELS, THE HOUSING PRESSURE COLD ADVANCE SHOULD BE ACTIVATED MANUALLY IF THE ENGINE TEMPERTURE IS ABOVE 125F (52C). ACTIVATING THE H.P.C.A. WILL REDUCE CRANKING TIME. TO ACTIVATE THE H.P.C.A. SOLENOID, DISCONNECT THE TWO LEAD CONNECTOR AT THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE SWITCH (FIG. 6C5-13 OR 13A ON PAGE 6C5-6 OF THE 1982 CHASSIS SERVICE MANUAL OR FIG. 6C5-10 ON PAGE 6C5-4 OF THE OMEGA AND CUTLASS CIERA SERVICE MANUAL) AND BRIDGE THE CONNECTOR WITH A JUMPER. AFTER THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, REMOVE THE JUMPER AND RECONNECT THE CONNECTOR TO THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE SWITCH.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
