STARTING FEBRUARY 10, 1981, APPROXIMATELY 5,000 THM 200 TRANSMISSIONS WERE BUILT WITH R.T.V. SILICONE SEALANT IN PLACE OF THE CURRENT PRODUCTION LATEX COATED CORK OIL PAN GASKET. IF IT IS NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE OIL PAN FROM A THM 200 TRANSMISSION AND A CORK GASKET IS NOT VISIBLE BETWEEN THE CASE FLANGE AND OIL PAN RAIL, FOLLOW THE SERVICE INFORMATION BELOW. SERVICE INFORMATION: SUGGESTED OIL LEAK DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE 1.CLEAN THE SUSPECTED AREA WITH SOLVENT TO REMOVE ALL TRACES OF OIL. BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET SOLVENT ON ANY RUBBER SEAL OR DETERIORATION MAY RESULT. (I.E., AXLE SEALS) 2.COAT SUSPECTED AREA WITH WHITE SPRAY POWDER (FOOT SPRAY WORKS WELL). 3.START ENGINE AND RUN AT HIGH IDLE. 4.REPAIR ANY LEAKS AND RECHECK AS NECESSARY. OIL PAN REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT 1.REMOVE THE OIL PAN FOLLOWING THE NORMAL SERVICE PROCEDURE. IF THE PAN DOES NOT COME FREE WHEN ALL THE ATTACHING BOLTS ARE LOOSE, TAP THE OIL PAN WITH A RUBBER MALLET. DO NOT PRY BETWEEN THE PAN RAIL AND CASE FLANGE. 2.TO REINSTALL THE OIL PAN, USE EITHER A CURRENT PRODUCTION LATEX COATED CORK OIL PAN GASKET OR R.T.V. SEALANT. IF R.T.V. SEALANT IS USED, THE THM 200 OIL PAN WITH A DOUBLE ROW OF BEADS DEPRESSED BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE PAN RAIL MUST ALSO BE USED. TO APPLY R.T.V. SEALANT FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE: A.USING A SHARP EDGED PLASTIC SCRAPER, REMOVE ANY LOOSE R.T.V. SEALANT REMAINING ON THE OIL PAN RAIL OR CASE FLANGE. REMOVE ANY SEALANT THAT MAY HAVE FALLEN INTO THE OIL PAN. IF THE TRANSMISSION IS ON A REPAIR STAND, USE CARE NOT TO LET ANY LOOSE SEALANT FALL INTO THE CASE WHILE SCRAPING. B.USE A CLEAN DRY RAG AND SOLVENT TO DRY THE CASE FLANGE AND OIL PAN RAIL. NOTICE: IF THE CASE FLANGE AND OIL PAN RAIL SURFACE ARE NOT DRY AND FREE OF OIL FILM OR IF THE INCORRECT OIL PAN IS USED, LEAKAGE WILL RESULT. C.APPLY A CONTINUOUS 1/16 INCH BEAD OF R.T.V. SEALANT TO THE OIL PAN RAIL ON THE AREA BETWEEN THE BEADS AND INSIDE THE BOLT HOLES. D.INSTALL THE OIL PAN WHILE THE SEALANT IS WET AND TORQUE THE BOLTS TO 16 N.M (12 FT. LBS.). THE R.T.V. SEALANT CURRENTLY RECOMMENDED FOR SERVICE APPLICATIONS CAN BE ORDERED FROM GMWDD IN A THREE OUNCE TUBE, PART NUMBER 1052366, OR A TEN OUNCE CARTRIDGE, PART NUMBER 1052434. 3.IF A GASKET IS USED, ALL R.T.V. MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE CASE FLANGE AND OIL PAN RAIL BEFORE REINSTALLATION.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
