OIL PAN BOLT TORQUE SERVICE MANUAL CORRECTION

1985 GRAND AM, GRAND PRIX, AND BONNEVILLE EQUIPPED WITH EITHER 3.0L V-6 (VIN CODE L) OR 3.8L (VIN CODES A, 3 & 9) ENGINE

"Please discard previous bulletin 85-SM-23 due to this revision which corrects the 3. 0L VIN Code. "

The oil pan bolt torque specifications for the above engines on pages 6A1-11 (Grand Prix, Bonneville) and 6A5A-14 (Grand Am) for the 1985 Service Manuals are in error. They should be 10 N.m (88 in. lbs.). If these bolts are over torqued it can cause damage to the dimples in the oil pan and over stretch the gasket causing it to split.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
