This bulletin has been revised to include a reference to bulletin 88-628-142 in paragraph one.
On page 6E3-C8-10 of the 1989 Chassis Service Manual for the "W" model and in bulletin 88-628-142 in Chart C-8C (page 1 of 3) 440-T4 Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) with Torque Management - 3.1L (VIN T) "W " Carline (Port) is the following statement:
"The TCC will engage on a warm engine under given road load in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears."
It should read as follows:
"The TCC will engage on a warm engine under given road load in 3rd and 4th gear."
Calibration for the 3.1L engine with a 440-T4/Hydramatic 4T60 transaxle does not engage the TCC in second gear.
Please make this correction in your 1989 Chassis Service Manual for the "W" model and in Chart C-8C (page 1 of 3) 3.1L (VIN T) of Bulletin 88-628-142.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
