TRANSAXLE ELECT. CONNECTOR REDESIGNED(INFORMATIONAL)

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON REDESIGNED TRANSAXLE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR

MODELS AFFECTED: 1993 BONNEVILLE, GRAND PRIX AND TRANS SPORT MODELS WITH 4T60-E TRANSAXLES

TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS: 3 HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E (RPO M13)

*Additional Alignment Ribs Added to Transaxle Electrical Connector (7 way) (GENERAL INFORMATION)

TRANSAXLE MODELS: ALL

BULLETIN COVERS:

A redesigned transaxle electrical connector has been approved for all 1993 HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E (RPO M13) transaxles. The redesign involves the addition of two (2) alignment ribs to the electrical connector. The change also required that the engine connector be modified to accommodate the added alignment ribs.

The new design was implemented to ease assembly of the engine harness to transaxle, and eliminate the possibility of bending the contact blades of the transaxle electrical connector during assembly.

DATE OF PRODUCTION CHANGE:

The revised electrical connector will be phased into production during the early part of the 1993 Model Year.

When servicing prior 4T60-E transaxle models (1991 & 1992), it is essential that the old (prior) electrical connector be used.

When servicing 1993 4T60-E model transaxles, either the old (prior), or new electrical connector can be used.

SERVICE INFORMATION:

To diagnose a 1993 model vehicle using a Kent-Moore Transmission Test Box (J 38791), it will be necessary to modify the existing Kent-Moore adapter harness (J 38791-10 and/or J 38791-20) to accommodate the added alignment ribs. This can be done by removing the outer most radius of material, (pie). This will allow the added alignment ribs to penetrate. This modification would allow both previous and new style transaxle electric connectors to be accessed.

An alternative to modifying the existing adapters would be to purchase new Kent-Moore adapters (J 38791-93) which are used in conjunction with adapters J 38791-10 and/or J 38791-20. These new adapters simulate the modified engine harness connector. The Kent-Moore adapters produce the same results as with the procedure above, but, without altering the existing adapters.

NOTE: J 38791-93 contains two (2) adapters. one from test box harness to transaxle, the other from text box harness to engine.

NOTE: J 38791-93 will not be available through Kent-Moore until late December, 1992.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
