Water Pump Replacement 3800 Engine

Tools Required

1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
2. Remove accessory electrical junction block and reposition.
3. Loosen water pump pulley bolts.
4. Remove drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement or Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
5. Remove water pump pulley.



6. Remove power steering pump mounting bolts and reposition. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
7. Remove bolts from water pump.
8. Remove water pump.
9. Clean the water pump mating surfaces.

1. Install the gasket and water pump.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

2. Install the bolts to the water pump using J 36660-A .

Tighten

•	Tighten the long bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft) plus 40 degrees

•	Tighten the short bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft) plus 80 degrees.




3. Install the water pump pulley, do not tighten the bolts.
4. Install the power steering pump with mounting bolts. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
5. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement or Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
6. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m(115 lb in)

7. Install the accessory electrical junction block.
8. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
9. Inspect for leaks.

Water Pump Replacement 3100 Engine

1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
2. Remove the drive belt guard.



3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.1L.



5. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
6. Remove the water pump pulley.
7. Remove the water pump attaching bolts.
8. Remove the water pump.
9. Remove the water pump gasket.
10. Clean the water pump mating surfaces.

1. Install the gasket (1).
2. Install the water pump (1).

3. Install the water pump mounting bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the water pump bolts to 10N·m (89 lb in).




4. Install the water pump pulley. Loosely install the mounting bolts.
5. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.1L.
6. Install the water pump pulley bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 25N·m (18 lb in).

7. Install the drive belt guard. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
8. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
9. Inspect for leaks.
