Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

   • Air bag deployment
   • Personal injury
   • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
   • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
   • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

Important: The starter motor on this vehicle is not serviceable and must be replaced as a complete unit.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the electrical connections at the starter motor. 3100 shown.
  4. Remove the torque converter cover.
    5. • For the 3100 L82 (VIN M) refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T60-E.
    • For the 3800 L36 (VIN K) or the L67 (VIN 1) refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65-E.

  5. Remove the starter bolts. Remove the shims, if necessary.

Installation Procedure

The 3100 L82 (VIN M) uses a PG260 F1 starter motor.

The 3800 L36 (VIN K) uses a PG260 F2 starter motor.

The 3800 L67 (VIN 1) uses a PG260 M starter motor.

  1. Make sure the correct starter motor is being installed.

    2. Install the starter motor to the engine.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Install the starter bolts.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the starter bolts to 43 N·m (31.7 lb ft).

  3. Install the torque converter cover.
    4. • For the 3100 L82 (VIN M) refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T60-E.
    • For the 3800 L36 (VIN K) or the L67 (VIN 1) refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65-E.

  4. Install the electrical connections and the nuts to the starter motor. 3800 shown.

    5. Tighten

        • Tighten the starter solenoid switch BAT terminal nut to 9.5 N·m (84.08 lb in).
        • Tighten the starter solenoid switch S terminal nut to 2.3 N·m (20.35 lb in).
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
