Action

There is incorrect tire pressure.

Inflate the tires to specification.

Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure Specifications in Maintenance and Lubrication.

There are binding ball joints.

Replace the ball joints as needed. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.

The front wheels are out of alignment.

Perform the front wheel alignment as needed. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.

There is a sticking steering gear valve.

  1. Flush the power steering system. Refer to Flushing the Power Steering System.
  2. Service partial steering gear if the symptom persists. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .

The steering gear is loose.

Tighten the power steering gear mounting bolts to specification. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .

The intermediate shaft bolt torque is too high.

Tighten the intermediate steering shaft bolt to specification.

Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.

The rack preload is misadjusted (too high).

Tighten the rack preload to specification.

Refer to Rack Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle (Magnasteer) or Rack Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle (Quiet Valve).

The steering shaft is binding.

  1. Inspect the steering shaft alignment.
  2. Adjust the steering shaft alignment as needed. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  3. Inspect the steering column mounting.
  4. Repair the steering column mounting as needed. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt
  5. Inspect the steering column bearing.
  6. Replace the steering column bearing as needed. Refer to the proper procedure in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt:
  7. • Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket- Disassemble (Floor Shift)
    • Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket- Disassemble (Column Shift)

The column to steering gear joints are binding.

  1. Inspect for the correct torque.
  2. Replace the components as needed. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket- Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket- Disassemble (Column Shift) in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.

The plastic boot on the intermediate shaft is out of position.

  1. Inspect the plastic boot.
  2. Replace the plastic boot as needed. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
