Problem

Action

The column is not aligned correctly.

  1. Inspect the following conditions/components:
  2. • Column alignment
    • Mounting
    • Bearings
  3. Adjust or replace the components as needed. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

The shaft seal is deformed or improperly installed.

  1. Inspect the shaft seal for proper installation.
  2. Reseat and tighten the shaft seal to specifications.
  3. Replace the shaft seal as needed. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

There is a flash on the ID of the shift tube.

  1. Inspect the shift tube.
  2. Service the shift tube as needed. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The intermediate shaft universal joint is tight.

  1. Clean the universal joint.
  2. Inspect the components.
  3. Replace the components as needed. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .

The upper or lower bearing is damaged.

  1. Inspect the bearings.
  2. Replace the components as needed. Refer to Steering Column Replacement or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
