Problem

Action

The column is not aligned correctly.

Inspect the following conditions/components:

    • Column alignment
    • Mounting
    • Bearings

Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

The horn contact ring is not lubricated.

  1. Inspect the horn contact ring.
  2. Service the horn contact ring as needed. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The joints from the column to the steering gear are loose.

  1. Inspect the joints for correct torque.
  2. Replace the components as needed.

The bearings are not lubricated with grease.

  1. Inspect the bearings.
  2. Lubricate the bearings with lithium grease. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The lower or upper steering shaft bearing is worn or broken.

  1. Inspect for a worn or broken steering shaft bearing.
  2. Replace the steering shaft bearing as needed. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The shaft lock retaining ring is not seated.

  1. Inspect the shaft lock retaining ring.
  2. Seat the shaft lock retaining ring firmly into the groove on the shaft. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The sight shields are loose.

  1. Inspect the sight shields.
  2. Service the sight shields as needed. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The spherical joint is not lubricated.

  1. Inspect the spherical joint.
  2. Lubricate the spherical joint with lithium grease. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
