Important: Zero the digital multimeter (DMM) in order to avoid misdiagnosis.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ACCY position.
  2. Turn the radio ON.
  3. Insert the cassette tape or the compact disc from the J 39916-A .
  4. Set the radio balance and fade controls to the detent (center) position.
  5. Set the radio volume at a normal listening level.
  6. Connect a digital multimeter (DMM).
  7. While playing the combination test tone from the cassette tape or the compact disc backprobe between terminal A and terminal B of the inoperative speaker harness connector.

Does the voltage vary above the specified value?

3V

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the amplifier connector.
  3. Connect a DMM.
  4. Measure the resistance by probing the amplifier connector between the feed (+) and return (-) circuits of the inoperative speaker.

Is the resistance within the specified range?

2-4ohms

Go to Step 7

Inspect for continuity in the speaker feed (+) circuit between the radio and the inoperative speaker.

Is there continuity in the speaker?

Go to Step 6

  1. Replace the inoperative speaker. Refer to Radio Front Side Door Speaker Replacement or Radio Rear Speaker Replacement or Radio Rear Speaker Grille Replacement for service procedure.
  2. Inspect the system.

Repair a poor connection or open in the inoperative speaker feed (+) circuit.
