GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

This vehicle has an engine oil life monitor. The engine oil life monitor will show when to change the engine oil and oil filter. This will usually occur between 5 000 km (3,000 miles) and 12 500 km (7,500 miles) since the last oil change. Under severe conditions, the indicator may come on before 5 000 km (3,000 miles).

Never drive the vehicle more than 12 500 km (7,500 miles) or 12 months without an oil and oil filter change. The system won't detect dust in the oil. So if the vehicle is driven in a dusty area, be sure to change the oil and oil filter every 5 000 km (3,000 miles) or sooner if the CHANGE OIL SOON indicator comes on. Reset the oil life monitor when the oil has been changed.

How to Reset the Engine Oil Life Monitor

To reset the CHANGE OIL SOON indicator:

  1. Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds.
  3. • If the CHANGE OIL SOON indicator flashes two times, the system is reset.
    • If the CHANGE OIL SOON indicator comes on and stays on for five seconds, try to reset the system again.

If the vehicle is equipped with the U40 option code, the vehicle has an OIL LIFE indicator. The oil life indicator shows the percentage of the oil's remaining useful life. The system predicts remaining oil life using travel distances, coolant temperature, engine RPM, and vehicle speed inputs.

To reset the OIL LIFE indicator:

  1. Press the trip calculator MODE button until the light appears next to OIL LIFE.
  2. Press and hold the trip calculator RESET button until the oil life percentage changes to 100%.
