REAR DOOR AJAR LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON

SUBJECT: REAR DOOR AJAR LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON UNTIL DOOR IS OPEN (CUT OFF AND EXCHANGE CONNECTORS)

MODELS: 1998 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX SEDAN

CONDITION:

CUSTOMERS MAY COMMENT THAT THE "DOOR AJAR" LIGHT FOR THE REAR DOORS IN THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER (DIC) DOES NOT COME ON UNTIL THE DOOR IS OPEN. THE LIGHT SHOULD COME ON WHEN THE DOOR IS AJAR (LATCHED BUT NOT CLOSED).

CAUSE:

THE RIGHT HAND AND LEFT HAND REAR DOOR WIRING HARNESSES WERE INSTALLED ON THE WRONG SIDES IN THE ASSEMBLY PLANT. THIS MAKES THE WIRING IN THE DOOR AJAR SWITCH CONNECTORS WRONG. THIS WAS CORRECTED IN PRODUCTION ON 1/16/98.

CORRECTION:

1. DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

2. REMOVE BOTH REAR DOOR TRIM PANELS. SEE PAGE 10-6-25 IN THE 1998 SERVICE MANUAL.

3. LOCATE THE TWO CONNECTORS AT THE DOOR LOCK IN EACH DOOR. SEE FIGURE 48, PAGE 8A-201-37, #2 AND 3. DISCONNECT BOTH CONNECTORS AND PULL THE HARNESS OUT FOR ACCESS.

4. CUT THE THREE-WIRE CONNECTOR OFF, LEAVING ABOUT THREE INCHES OF WIRE. YOU WILL USE THE RIGHT SIDE CONNECTOR ON THE LEFT SIDE AND THE LEFT SIDE CONNECTOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE. IF A CONNECTOR IS DAMAGED, THE REPLACEMENT P/N IS 12126487.

5. STRIP THE WIRES, THEN CONNECT BLACK TO BLACK, DARK BLUE TO DARK BLUE AND LT GRN/BLK TO LT BLU/BLK. SOLDER AND SEAL THE SPLICES, THEN REINSTALL THE CONNECTORS TO THE SWITCHES.

6. REPLACE THE TRIM PANELS. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. TEST THE SYSTEM TO INSURE THAT THE "DOOR AJAR" LIGHT COMES ON WHEN EACH REAR DOOR IS LATCHED BUT NOT OPEN (ON THE SECONDARY LATCH).
