Refer to the procedures in Wiring Systems for information on the following items:

    • Wiring diagrams
    • Wiring harness repair
    • Connectors
    • Other diagnostic information

Most lighting problems are caused by the following conditions:

    • Loose connectors
    • Open or shorted wiring
    • Burned-out bulbs
    • Bad switches
    • Inadequate grounds
    • Open fuses

You can repair many of these problems by replacing a part that requires a special procedure (such as a lens and a housing which are sealed together). For these repairs, follow the instructions which are normally included in the replacement parts package.

When you remove a component that requires special sealing items (such as sealing washers), reinstall those items when you replace the component. If any body sealing items (such as grommets) are disturbed, repair these items in order to keep the passenger compartment properly sealed.

Use the following general guidelines in order to diagnose lighting system problems:

  1. Verify the owner's problem.
  2. Attempt to operate other systems which are powered through the same fuse. If these other systems are inoperative, replace the fuse. Refer to Power Distribution Schematics for fuse applications.
  3. Test for aftermarket equipment. If you discover add-on accessories, disconnect the system in order to verify that the add-on's installation is not the cause of the problem.
  4. Test all of the connectors and all of the wiring which is related to the suspected electrical component. Test for the following conditions:
  5. • Poor mating of connector halves
    • Terminals which are not fully seated in the connector body (backed-out)
    • Dirt or corrosion on the connector terminals, which may impede proper terminal contact
  6. Test all related ground eyelets for a clean and a tight connection.

If you are still unable to correct the problem, refer to Troubleshooting with a Digital Multimeter or Troubleshooting with a Test Lamp in Wiring Systems.
