Play a known good cassette tape in the tape player.

Does the tape play weak, slow or garbled?

Inspect the tape player through the tape door for an obstruction .

Is there an obstruction?

Go to Step 5

1. Check the moving parts and the tape head.
2. Remove any obstruction.
3. Clean the moving parts and tape head. Refer to Cassette Player Care and Cleaning for service procedure.
4. Insert a cleaning cassette.
5. Use a diagnostic tape from the J 39916-A .

Does the test tape operate correctly?

Go to Step 4

System OK

Perform the motor speed test with the diagnostic test tape from the J 39916-A for service procedure.

Is the motor speed correct?

Go to Step 5

System OK

Replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement for service procedure.
