This vehicle is equipped with a body control module (BCM).
The BCM performs multiple body control functions. Several of the vehicle systems
are directly connected to the BCM such as the following systems:
• | The retained accessory power (RAP) |
• | The content theft deterrent |
These systems are controlled by the BCMs outputs. The BCM controls its
outputs based upon the input information obtained from the sensors and switches
that are directly connected to the BCM. The BCM evaluates the input information
and controls the body systems by commanding an output on or off.
Body Control Module (BCM)
This vehicle is equipped with one of three BCM types. The BCM type installed
on this vehicle is based on vehicle equipment content and options.
The BCM types are:
Refer to Diagnostics later in this section for more information on how
to identify the BCM type installed.
BCM Type 2
The BCM Type 2 provides Retained Accessory Power (RAP), audible warnings,
interior lighting, and automatic power door locks.
BCM Type 3
The BCM Type 3 provides all the features of the BCM type 2 plus keyless
entry. Vehicle with RPO AUO are equipped with a BCM type 3.
BCM Type 4
The BCM Type provides all the features of the BCM type 2 and 3 plus
content theft deterrent. Vehicle with RPO AUO and UA6 are equipped with a
BCM type 4.
Body Control Module (BCM) Features
Based on vehicle equipment/options, the Body Control Module (BCM) controls
these vehicle systems.
• | Retained Accessory Power (RAP). |
• | Keyless entry (BCM) type 3 and 4. |
• | Content theft deterrent (BCM type 4). |
Retained Accessory Power (RAP)
The Retained Accessory Power (RAP) feature allows the operation of the
radio, power windows, power mirrors and power sunroof (if equipped) for 10 minutes
(or until a vehicle door opens) after the ignition switch has been turned
form the RUN or ACC to the OFF or UNLOCK position.
Refer to
Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Circuit Description
in Retained Accessory Power (RAP).
Audible Warnings
The following components are equipped with audible warnings.
• | Key in ignition reminder. |
• | Fasten seat belt reminder. |
• | Fasten belts indicator control. |
• | Driver information display reminder. |
• | Trip calculator reminder. |
• | Last door closed locking confirmation. |
• | Feature customization and diagnostics feedback. |
Refer to
Audible Warnings Circuit Description
in Audible Warnings.
Interior Lighting
The following areas are features of the interior lighting.
• | Interior illumination control. |
• | Door key unlock illumination (BCM) Type 4 Only). |
• | Keyless entry unlock illumination (BCM Type 3 and 4 Only). |
• | Inadvertent load (battery rundown) protection. |
• | Feature customization of interior lighting modes delayed illumination,
and exit lighting. |
Refer to
Interior Lights Circuit Description
in Interior Lighting.
Automatic Door Locks
The BCM type 2 has these automatic door lock features:
• | Last door closed locking. |
• | Lockout prevention override. |
• | Shift into PARK unlock. |
• | Shift out of PARK lock. |
The BCM type 3 has these automatic door lock features, in addition to
BCM type 2 features:
• | Remote driver door unlock. |
• | Remote all door unlock. |
The BCM type 4 has this automatic door lock feature, in addition to
BCM type 2 and 3 features. A key cylinder unlock.
The BCM provides feature customization of these door lock functions:
• | Shift out of PARK lock. |
• | Shift into PARK unlock. |
• | Last door closed locking. |
Refer to
Automatic Door Lock Circuit Description
in Automatic Door Locks.
Keyless Entry
The Body Control Module (BCM) type 3 provides these keyless entry features:
• | Remote driver door unlock. |
• | Remote all door unlock. |
• | Remote activation verification (BCM type 4). |
• | Remote alarm (BCM type 4). |
• | Feature customization of remote unlock control and remote activation
verification. |
Refer to
Keyless Entry System Circuit Description
in Keyless Entry.
Content Theft Deterrent
The Body Control Module (BCM) type 4 features a content theft deterrent
system which is designed to deter vehicle vandalism and theft. The content
theft deterrent system perform these functions:
• | Disables fuel delivery to the engine |
The BCM monitors the following:
• | The keyless entry system |
The BCM operates the headlamps, horn and the theft deterrent indicator
lamp according to the mode of operation the system is in. The BCM also communicates
a fuel enable signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when the system
is disarmed.
Refer to
Content Theft Deterrent (CTD) Circuit Description
in Content Theft Deterrent.
Diagnostics
The Body Control Module (BCM) provides diagnostics to assist service
technicians during troubleshooting. The BCM has the following diagnostic capabilities
when entering the diagnostics mode:
• | Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) |
Entering The Feature Customization Mode
When you perform BCM diagnostics, enter the feature customization mode.
During this mode, the BCM identifies itself. This ensures that the option
content of the vehicle matches the capabilities of the BCM.
Complete the following steps in order to enter the feature customization
mode:
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Remove the MALL PGM fuse.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ACC position.
Upon entering the feature customization mode, the BCM flashes the fasten
belts indicator and sounds the chime 2, 3 or 4 times. The number of chimes
is equal to the BCM type used on the vehicle. Ensure that the BCM installed
on the vehicle is compatible with all the features on the vehicle. If an incorrect
BCM is installed, replace the BCM with the correct type.
At this point, the following vehicle systems have features that can
be customized:
• | The automatic door lock |
• | The content theft deterrent |
