Powertrain control module (PCM) service ALWAYS consists of reprogramming of
the PCM's electrically-erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM). Sometimes,
the procedure involves replacing the PCM, and reprogramming the PCM. If the diagnostic
procedures call for a PCM replacement, verify that the PCM is the correct part for
the vehicle. If the PCM is faulty, remove the old PCM, and install the new
service PCM. You must program the new PCM.
DTC P0602 indicates that the EEPROM is not programmed, or that the EEPROM
has malfunctioned.
Removal Procedure
Important: It is necessary to record the remaining engine
oil life. If the replacement module is not programed with the remaining engine oil
life, the engine oil life will default to 100%. If the replacement module is not programmed
with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to be changed at 5000 km
(3,000 mi) from the last engine oil change.
- Using a scan tool, retrieve the percentage of remaining engine oil. Record the
remaining engine oil life.
Notice: Turn the ignition OFF when installing or removing the PCM connectors
and disconnecting or reconnecting the power to the PCM (battery cable, PCM
pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.) in order to prevent internal PCM damage.
- Disconnect the negative battery. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
in Engine Electrical.
- Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the 3 bolts from the inner fender brace, and remove the
brace.
- Loosen the clamp that secures the air intake duct to the air cleaner housing.
- Carefully remove the air intake duct from the throttle body and from the
air cleaner housing.
- Remove
the 2 screws from the 2 air cleaner housing sections.
- Remove the air cleaner housing cover assembly.
Notice: Do not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit
board in order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to
the PCM.
- Without disconnecting the PCM connectors, remove the PCM and the harness from
the PCM housing.
- Disconnect the PCM connectors.
Installation Procedure
- Reconnect the PCM connectors.
- Carefully reinstall the PCM and the harness into the PCM housing.
- Reinstall
the air cleaner housing cover assembly (1).
- Reinstall the 2 screws from the 2 air cleaner housing sections.
- Carefully reinstall the air intake duct to the throttle body and to the
air cleaner housing.
- Tighten the clamp securing the air intake duct to the air cleaner housing.
- Position the inner fender brace, and reinstall the 3 bolts.
- Program the PCM.
- The replacement PCM will NOT allow Secondary AIR Pump operation until
a total of 10 miles has accumulated.
EEPROM Programming
Set Up
- Verify that the following conditions have been met:
• | The battery is fully charged. If the battery required charging, be sure
to disconnect all charging equipment. |
• | Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. |
• | The Techline™ equipment cable connection at the DLC is secure. |
- Program the PCM, using the latest software for the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date
Techline™ equipment user's instructions.
- If the PCM fails to program, proceed as follows:
• | Verify that all PCM connections are OK. |
• | Check the Techline™ equipment for the latest software version. |
• | Program the PCM. If you still cannot properly program the PCM, replace
the PCM. You must program the replacement PCM. |
Functional Check
- Perform the Powertrain On-Board Diagnostic System Check. Refer to
Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check
.
- Start the engine, and allow the engine to run for 1 minute.
- Use the scan tool in order to scan for the DTCs.
