Generator Whine Noise in Audio System (Install Noise Filter)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a whine type noise coming from the radio speakers. This condition is more noticeable after the vehicle has made connection with OnStar®. The condition is also speed sensitive.

Correction

Install a noise filter in-line or in series with the OnStar® power wire. Use the procedure and part numbers listed below.

  1. Remove the OnStar® fuse.
  2. Remove the screws from the right side front carpet retainer and remove the retainer from the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right side closeout/insulator panel.
  4. Pull back the carpet from the kick panel.
  5. Locate and disconnect the 22-way (light gray and blue) IP harness connector.
  6. Remove the terminal in cavity A1 (orange wire) which is located on the body side of the harness.
  7. Crimp the new terminal, P/N 12191811, to yellow lead of noise filter on the side with black wire.
  8. Install the terminal and wire into cavity A1 of the IP connector.
  9. Remove the terminal and strip insulation from the orange wire.
  10. Crimp the wire connector onto the orange wire and yellow lead from filter.
  11. Connect the black lead from the filter to a suitable ground (example: one of the IP fuse block bracket screws).
  12. Secure the filter and wires to the harness with tape.
  13. Install the carpet back into position.
  14. Install the right side closeout/insulator panel.
  15. Install the right side front carpet retainer and screws.
  16. Install the OnStar® fuse.
