Removal Procedure

Important: When replacing battery cables, always use replacement cables that are the same type, gauge and length.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery.
  3. Remove the ground wire bolt from the frame.

  5. Remove the remote positive stud cover.
  6. Remove the positive battery cable junction block lead nut.
  7. Remove the positive battery cable from the bussed electrical center (BEC).
  8. Remove the BEC from the strut tower.
  9. Unclip and remove the positive battery cable harness from the BEC.
  10. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  11. Remove the front lower air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  13. Remove the positive battery cable from the starter motor BAT terminal.

  14. Object Number: 289415  Size: SH
  15. Remove the protective boot from the generator output BAT terminal.
  16. Remove the BAT terminal nut and the positive battery cable from the generator.

  18. Unclip and remove the battery cable harness from the retainers.
  19. Remove the battery cable harness from the vehicle.
  20. Remove the positive battery cable from the wiring harness conduit.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the positive battery cable into the wiring harness conduit.
  2. Install the battery cable harness to the vehicle.
  3. Install the battery cable harness to the retainers.

  4. Object Number: 289415  Size: SH
  5. Install the positive battery cable to the generator.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the generator output BAT terminal nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  9. Install the protective boot to the generator output BAT terminal.

  11. Install the positive battery cable to the starter motor BAT terminal.
  12. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (84 lb in).

  14. Install the front lower air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the positive battery cable harness to the BEC.
  17. Install the BEC to the strut tower.

  18. Object Number: 289343  Size: SH
  19. Install the positive battery cable to the BEC.
  20. Install the junction block lead nut to the positive battery cable.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the lead nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  22. Install the remote positive stud cover.
  23. Install the ground wire and the bolt to the frame.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  25. Install the positive battery cable to the battery.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  27. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
