Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 161074 Size: SH
  1. Verify that the shift shaft in the Neutral position.
  2. Important: DO NOT ROTATE A NEW PNP SWITCH. A new PNP switch is pinned in the Neutral position. If the bolt holes do not align with the mounting boss on the transaxle, verify that the shaft is in the Neutral position.

Adjust the PNP switch if the new switch has been rotated and the pin is broken or if using an old PNP switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment .

  3. Align the flats of the shift shaft to the flats in the PNP switch.
  4. Install the PNP switch to the mounting boss.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the PNP switch bolts.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Install the automatic transaxle range selector lever.
  9. Install the automatic transaxle range selector nut.
  10. Tighten
Tighten the nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Object Number: 161102 Size: SH
  11. Connect the PNP switch electrical connectors.

  12. Object Number: 161161 Size: SH
  13. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch.
  14. Important: Verify that the engine starts only in the Park position or the Neutral position once the PNP switch is installed. Readjust the PNP switch and/or inspect the shifter and the automatic transaxle range selector lever if the engine starts in any other position. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment and/or Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .

  15. Install the air cleaner intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L or Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
  16. Remove the blocks from the wheels.
  17. Release the parking brake.
