J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor


    Object Number: 54389  Size: SH

    Important: Use oversize valve stem seals if you install oversize valves.

  1. Lubricate the valve stem with clean engine oil.
  2. Install the valves.
  3. Lightly lap the reconditioned valves into the valve seat.
  4. Install the valve stem oil seals.
  5. Install the valve springs.
  6. Install the valve spring caps.

  8. Compress the valve springs using the J 38606 .
  9. Install the valve spring cap keys.
  10. Hold the valves in place with grease, if necessary.

  11. Release the valve springs.
  12. Ensure that the valve locks are seated.
  13. Measure valve spring installed height.
  14. If the valve spring installed height is not within specifications install 0.25 mm (0.010 in) rocker arm shims as needed. If more than 2 shims are needed replace the cylinder head or valve.

  15. Object Number: 54960  Size: SH

    Notice: In order to avoid damage, install the spark plugs after the cylinder head has been installed on the engine.

  16. Install the fuel line bracket.
  17. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  18. Install the fuel line bracket bolt or stud.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the fuel line bracket bolt or stud to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
