Tools Required

    • J 24420-C Harmonic Balancer Puller
    • J 29113 Crankshaft Balancer Installer
    • J 37096 Flywheel Holder
    • J 45059 Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

    Notice: The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.

  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Install the jack stands to the frame.
  6. Loosen the left frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  7. Using the jack stands, lower the right side of the frame to access the crankshaft balancer.
  8. Remove the torque converter covers. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65 - E.
  9. Install the J 37096 to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.

  10. Object Number: 190528  Size: SH
  11. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and the washer.

  12. Object Number: 370280  Size: SH
  13. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Use the J 24420-C .

Installation Procedure

  1. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346286 (Canadian P/N 10953472) or the equivalent to the keyway of the balancer.

  2. Object Number: 96019  Size: SH
  3. Install the crankshaft balancer. Use the J 29113 .
  4. Remove the J 29113 .
  5. Install the J 37096 to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.
  6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 190528  Size: SH
  7. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and the bolt.
  8. Tighten

    1. Tighten the bolt to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).
    2. Use theJ 45059 to rotate the crankshaft balancer bolt an additional 72 degrees.
  9. Remove the J 37096 from the flywheel.
  10. Install the torque converter covers. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65 - E.
  11. Raise the frame to the original position.
  12. Install and tighten the frame bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  13. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  14. Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  17. Perform a CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
