Correction

Technicians are to reprogram the OnStar® system with an updated software calibration. The new calibration was released in TIS satellite data update version 10.5, which was made available on October 18,2004.

Technicians should perform the following checks before proceeding with the software update. Connect a Tech 2® to the vehicle and run the DTC B1000 test, which is located under the "Special Function" menu. This test will tell you if a software update is required. If an update is required, you will need to first check the Vehicle Communication Interface Module (VCIM) software level, as well as the Station Identification (STID). Within the "ID Information" menu, check the software version under the "Module 1" section. Only vehicles with software level 146 should be updated. Under the "Module 2" section, verify that the STID is a number between 9,250,000 and 10,999,999 . If all of these criteria are met, only then is a software update to be performed.

Technicians should perform the OnStar® system software update using the following procedure:

  1. Locate the Mobile Identification Number (MIN), the Mobile Dialed Number (MDN) and Trans ID (Transceiver Identification Number). This information will be needed in order to complete the software update. Go to the "Special Functions" section of the Tech 2®. The MIN, MDN and Trans ID are displayed under "Program Phone Number". Write down the MIN, MDN and Trans ID, which will be used later.
  2. Go to the main menu and enter "Service Programming System". Select "Request Info" and follow the instructions. This step should only take a few seconds to run. For the 2004 Grand Prix, go to the "Request OnStar® Info for SPS Programming" section through the "Special Function" menu.
  3. Connect the Tech 2® to your computer terminal and enter the "Service Programming System". Make sure the following fields are selected on the terminal: "Tech 2®", "Reprogram ECU" and "Vehicle". Click through the screens on the terminal until you get to the B1000 software update area. You will be offered a choice between English and French. Be sure to select English, unless you want French language to be downloaded to the OnStar® system. Instructions may also be given here to remove certain fuses prior to reprogramming the Vehicle Communication Interface Module (VCIM).
  4. If you were directed to remove fuses prior to reprogramming, remove the specified fuses.
  5. After the B1000 software update is uploaded, reconnect the Tech 2® to the vehicle. Make sure that the vehicle battery is fully charged, or connect a battery charger to the vehicle. It is very important that the vehicle's battery voltage does not go low during the software update procedure. Go to the "SPS Programming" section and then select "Program ECU". The OnStar® software update will now be performed. This update should take approximately 12 minutes. After the software update is complete, key off the vehicle. On the Tech 2® exit to "Diagnostics". Key on the vehicle and build the vehicle on the Tech 2®. Go to "OnStar®", then "Special Functions", and then "Setup New OnStar®". Once this is done, exit to "Program Number". This is where the MIN, MDN and Trans ID, that were written down earlier, will be entered.
  6. Check to see if the software version has been updated to 147. If it has, then the software update was successful. The OnStar® System Status Light should now be green.
  7. Install any fuses that were removed prior to the start of the Vehicle Communication Interface Module (VCIM) reprogramming procedure.
  8. If fuses were removed as part of the reprogramming steps, check the modules on the serial data bus for DTCs and clear as necessary.
  9. The last step is to press the OnStar® blue button to connect with OnStar®. When an advisor answers, request a "reconfigure after reprogramming". If your customer previously had OnStar® Personal Calling (OPC), make sure that the advisor re-enables this feature.
