Sunroof Description and Operation One Connector System

Sunroof

This diagnostic procedure is to be used for the 1 connector Sunroof System that combines the sunroof control module with the sunroof motor/actuator.

The Sunroof System consists of the following components:

    • BATT MAIN 2 Fuse 50 A
    • Body control module (BCM)
    • RAP relay
    • S/Roof Fuse 20 A
    • Sunroof module (includes sunroof motor/actuator)
    • Sunroof switch

The Sunroof System is controlled by the sunroof switch and the sunroof motor/actuator assembly.

When the ignition is turned to RUN or ACCESSORY, or when the retained accessory power (RAP) system is active, the body control module (BCM) applies a ground to the RAP relay in the instrument panel (I/P) fuse block. This activates the RAP relay and allows battery positive voltage to be applied through the SUNROOF Fuse to the sunroof module. Ground for the sunroof module is supplied from G302.

The sunroof can be placed in 3 preset positions:

    • Open
    • Vent
    • Closed

When the sunroof switch is placed in the OPEN position, a ground is applied from the sunroof switch low reference circuit , through the sunroof switch and to the sunroof switch open signal circuit. The sunroof motor/actuator then applies voltage to the sunroof motor open control circuit and applies a ground to the sunroof motor close circuit. The sunroof motor then opens the sunroof to the full open position.

When the sunroof switch is placed in the VENT position, a ground is applied from the sunroof switch low reference circuit , through the sunroof switch and to the sunroof switch open signal circuit. The sunroof module then applies voltage to the sunroof motor open control circuit and applies a ground to the sunroof motor close circuit. The sunroof motor then opens the sunroof to the VENT position.

When the sunroof switch is placed and held in the CLOSED position, a ground is applied from the sunroof switch low reference circuit , through the sunroof switch and to the sunroof switch close signal circuit. The sunroof module then applies voltage to the sunroof motor close control circuit and applies a ground to the sunroof motor open circuit. The sunroof motor then closes the sunroof.

The sunroof can be placed in any preferred open position when:

    • The sunroof is in the fully opened position by pressing and holding the sunroof switch in the CLOSE position until the panel has reached the desired position then release the CLOSE switch in order to stop the sunroof
    • The sunroof is opening, it can be stopped by momentarily pressing either side of the switch.

The sunroof control module, sun roof actuator, and the sunroof motor are integral parts of the sunroof module assembly and are not service separately.

Sunroof Description and Operation 2 Connector System

Sunroof

This diagnostic procedure is to be used for the 2 connector Sunroof System that uses a sunroof control module that is separate from the sunroof motor/actuator.

The Power Sunroof System consists of the following components:

    • Sunroof control module, with sunroof motor and internal hall effect sensors
    • Sunroof switch
    • Sunroof glass-spoiler type, with glass sliding above roof
    • Sunshade
    • Rail and track assembly upon which the sunroof glass rides
    • Power Sunroof System circuit breaker: SUNROOF 20 A

Power Sunroof Operation

The sunroof control module monitors the sunroof switch input requests and based on the internal hall effect sensors, will control an output to the sunroof motor, to drive the sunroof glass to the requested position. The power sunroof will operate with the ignition switch turned to RUN. Use the rocker type sunroof switch, located in the front center of the headliner, to command the sunroof to :

    • Vent
    • Express Open
    • Close

Pressing the sunroof switch rearward, the sunroof glass will slide from:

    • Closed position to the vent position.
    • Vent position to the open position.

Pressing the sunroof switch forward, the sunroof glass will slide from:

    • Open position to the vent position.
    • Vent position to the closed position.

Open to Vent

To open the power sunroof to the vent position from the closed position, momentarily press the rear portion, of the sunroof switch. This will apply the sunroof switch low reference circuit to the sunroof open signal circuit, 5-volt reference input, pulling the reference voltage to 0 volts. Once the sunroof control module receives the input request, the sunroof control module will control the sunroof motor to raise the rear of the sunroof glass upward. The sunroof glass will soft stop at the full vent position based on the internal hall effect sensors. The sunshade will have to be manually slid closed.

Express Open

The express open will work only with the sunroof glass in the full vent or any partial open position. To express open the power sunroof, momentarily press the rear portion, of the sunroof switch once. This will apply the sunroof switch low reference circuit to the sunroof switch signal open signal circuit, 5-volt reference input, pulling the reference voltage to 0 volts. Once the sunroof control module receives the input request, the sunroof control module will control the sunroof motor to express open, automatically sliding the sunroof glass above the roof. The sunroof glass will soft stop at the full open position based on the internal hall effect sensors. As the sunroof glass expresses open so will the sunshade. To stop the sunroof glass in a desired position other than to the express open position, during the express open operation, momentarily press the sunroof switch again, either direction, to stop the movement.

To Close

To close the power sunroof press and hold the front portion, of the sunroof switch. This will apply the sunroof switch low reference circuit to the sunroof close signal circuit, 5-volt reference input, pulling the reference voltage to 0 volts. The sunroof switch close signal input to the sunroof control module needs to have constant 0 volts applied, switch pressed, to allow the motor to continue to drive the sunroof glass, past the vent position, until it reaches the closed position. The sunroof glass will soft stop at the closed position based on the internal hall effect sensors. To close the sunshade, this will have to be manually slid closed.

Sunroof Motor

The sunroof motor is part of the sunroof control module, which is serviced as one part.

Hall Effect Sensors

The hall effect sensors are internal to the sunroof control module. The sunroof control module monitors the hall effect sensors to control the movement and soft stops of the glass at the vent, full open and flush closed positions.
