DTC Descriptor

DTC B0931: Compass Sensor Circuit

Circuit/System Description

The compass information is displyed in the driver information center (DIC). The electronic compass module interfaces with the DIC via the compass data signal circuit and the compass clock signal circuit. The two circuits function as a dedicated serial data communication link between the electronic compass module and the DIC. The communication link is a two-wire bi-directional link between the DIC and the electronic compass module only. The DIC controls the compass clock signal circuit used for reading and writing data. The compass data signal circuit is used to transmit data between the DIC and the electronic compass module. The electronic compass module internal fault detection is handled by the DIC and if the DIC does not receive a valid compass information from the electronic compass module, the DIC blanks the compass display.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The DIC monitors the analog input value at power up.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The DIC does not detect the compass sensor.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The DTC will be set and stored in non-volatile memory.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The DTC becomes history when the DIC no longer detects a failure.
    • The history DTC clears after 100 fault-free ignition cycles.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the electronic compass module.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1.0 ohm of resistance between the ground circuit terminal 14 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified value, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates when connected between the ignition voltage circuit terminal 13 and ground.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition voltage circuit for an open/high resistance.
  6. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance at the compass clock signal circuit terminal 12 and the compass data signal circuit terminal 11.
  7. If greater than the specified value, test the compass clock signal circuit and the compass data signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit(s) test normal, replace the driver information center (DIC).
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the electronic compass module.
