A one-piece rear main seal has been released for service on 1982 1.8L L-4 engines (VIN Code G). The service kit, Part Number 14081761, previously approved for use in 1983 and early 1984 2.OL L-4 engines did not include servicing the 1982 1.8L L-4 engines (refer to Bulletin 84-6(Gasoline)-15), due to the knurls on the crankshaft rear seal surface. Testing however has shown this to be an acceptable service procedure for engines with crankshafts that are knurled. It is possible that this procedure may not be effective. For this reason, a new 1.8L crankshaft, Part Number 14086053, without knurls, has been released to service the 1.8L engine, it too should be used with the one-piece rear seal, Part Number 14081761.
Kit, Part Number 14081761, includes tool, seal and instructions.
The following sequence of repair and installation should be followed.
Installation of narrow one-piece crankshaft seal, Part Number 14081761
1. Remove engine and mount on stand in inverted position with coolant and oil drained.
2. Remove crankshaft per service manual instructions.
3. With crankshaft out of engine, remove oil seal and clean all sealant and foreign material from cylinder case, bearing cap and crankshaft using a non-abrasive cleaning solvent.
4. Inspect components for nicks, burrs, scratches and machining defects at all sealing and mating surfaces and crankshaft journal.
5. Apply a very thin coat (approximately l.0mm bead) of anaerobic sealant 1052357 to O.D. of new seal. Seal should remain on installation tool as received during application of sealant.
6. Push seal and tool assembly onto the rear of crankshaft as far as it will go. Position the tool so that the arrow points toward the cylinder and case assembly as shown in the instructions.
7. With the tool in place, set crankshaft in engine. Aligning seal in case groove.
8. Remove the installation tool, rotating as shown, and discard.
9. Apply a light coat of engine oil on crankshaft journals.
10. Apply a l.0mm bead of anaerobic sealant 1052357 to the rear main bearing split line surface between the rear main seal and the oil pan seal groove. Install cap and main bearing. Torque bolts to 95 N.m (70 ft. lbs.).
11. Install remaining caps and main bearing. Torque bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).
12. Install connecting rod bearings and caps. Torque to specifications.
13. Complete engine assembly and installation per Pontiac Service Manual.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
