COLORED TIRE VALVE CAPS ON J-SERIES

EARLY 1982 ('J' CARS) MAY HAVE EITHER CLEAR, GREY, OR DARK COLOURED TIRE INFLATION VALVE CAPS WHICH MAY HAVE A VERY FAINT BLUISH TINT IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT. THESE CAPS HAVE BEEN MOULDED WITH A MATERIAL WHICH FLUORESCES (GLOWS) IN ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT. THIS PERMITS A NEW MACHINE IN THE ASSEMBLY PLANT TO "SEE" THE VALVE CAP SO THAT IT CAN AUTOMATICALLY MATCH THE TIRE HIGH POINT MARK (ALSO FLUORESCENT) TO THE VALVE STEM, WHICH IS AT THE LOW POINT OF THE ('J' CAR) WHEEL. THIS MATCH MOUNTING PROCESS IS DONE TO HELP ELIMINATE VIBRATION BY PROVIDING THE ROUNDEST POSSIBLE TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLY. SHOULD AN OWNER OBJECT TO THE COLOUR, THESE CAPS CAN BE REPLACED WITH STANDARD BLACK CAPS FROM OTHER CARLINES WHICH ARE NORMALLY DISCARDED WHEN WHEEL TRIM AND VALVE EXTENSIONS ARE INSTALLED.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
