DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR HITTING DOOR INNER PANEL

A CONDITION MAY OCCUR ON SOME EARLY PRODUCTION 1982 'J' FOUR-DOOR STYLES (35-69) BUILT PRIOR TO OCTOBER 30, 1981, WHERE THE FRONT DOORS WILL NOT LOCK WHEN THE POWER LOCK SWITCH IS USED. THIS CONDITION IS CAUSED BY THE TOP OF THE LOCK ACTUATOR HITTING THE DOOR INNER PANEL AS THE LOCK ACTUATOR IS ACTIVATED. IN ORDER TO DETERMINE IF THIS CONDITION EXISTS, ACTUATE THE POWER LOCK SWITCH. OPERATE THE DOOR OUTSIDE HANDLE AND IF THE DOOR OPENS FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE BELOW. TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION: 1.REMOVE THE DOOR TRIM PANELS ON THE RIGHT AND LEFT FRONT DOORS AS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 5 OF THE BODY SERVICE MANUAL. 2.PULL BACK THE WATER DEFLECTOR FAR ENOUGH FROM THE REAR UPPER CORNER OF THE DOOR TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE LOCK ACTUATOR. USING A POCKET KNIFE OR OTHER SHARP BLADED TOOL CUT OFF THE TOP OF THE RUBBER BUMPER AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE LOCK ACTUATOR BY LOCKING AND UNLOCKING THE DOOR, WITH THE SWITCH, FIVE TIMES. REPEAT THE OPERATION ON THE OPPOSITE FRONT DOOR. 3.REPLACE ALL THE PREVIOUSLY REMOVED TRIM.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
