ENGINE OIL LEAK ABOVE FILTER GALLEY PLUG INFORMATION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1983-84 'J' Series Vehicles Equipped With 1.8L OHC Engines (Codes O And J)

An engine oil leak may occur at the gallery plug just above the engine oil filter. It may appear to be a filter leak at first glance, as the oil will run down onto the filter base and down over the sides.

The leak may be the result of inadequate sealer or improper torque on the gallery plug.

The gallery plug should be removed, the plug and hole cleaned, thread sealer applied and re-installed. The plug should be torqued to 20-25 N.m (15-18 lb. ft.)

A production change was made in March 1984 which changes this plug from a tapered fit to a flush fit with a gasket. It can be identified by the external hex head rather than the internal hex head on the tapered plug.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
