1980 - 1989 6000, BONNEVILLE, SUNBIRD AND GRAND PRIX MODELS
This bulletin has reference to the Special Policy Adjustment Bulletin on Temporary Reduction of Power Steering Assist when Cold, Bulletin 84-SM-35 and Bulletin 88-3-24.
It appears some dealers are replacing a higher than average number of short racks to correct the above mentioned condition without first attempting the seal kit repair.
Dealer Service Management are reminded that the split ring repair procedure is to be attempted BEFORE obtaining zone approval to replace the steering gear.
Dealership technicians should review the split-ring instructional videotape which was sent to all dealers with the special policy bulletin and carefully follow the instructions in the bulletin.
If a copy is not readily available at the dealership, please contact your zone office and a copy will be made available for your use.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
