IF A NEW BODY SIDE OR BUMPER FILLER MOULDING IS TO BE INSTALLED, DO NOT USE ATTACHING SCREWS UNLESS EXISTING MOULDINGS ARE SCREW RETAINED. IF THE ORIGINAL MOULDING IS TO BE INSTALLED, APPLY 3M NEOPRENE TAPE, PART NUMBER 4265 OR EQUIVALENT TO THE BACK OF MOULDING. THIS TAPE SHOULD BE USED IN PLACE OF THE ONE SPECIFIED IN THE GENERAL INFORMATION SECTION OF THE 1982 "A" CAR FISHER BODY SERVICE MANUAL. BODY SIDE SERVICE MOULDINGS ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH GENERAL MOTORS PARTS DEPARTMENT IN TWO LENGTHS, 1356.5 MM (PART NUMBER 20350942) AND 371.5 MM (PART NUMBER 20364252). IN ADDITION, TWO TYPES OF FRONT AND REAR BUMPER FILLER MOULDINGS ARE AVAILABLE. THE FIRST TYPE (USED ON EARLY PRODUCTION CARS) AND A SECOND TYPE THAT IS LONGER AND EXTENDS FROM THE WHEEL OPENING THROUGH THE FILLER. WHEN ORDERING REPLACEMENT MOULDINGS, IT IS NECESSARY TO IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF MOULDING USED. REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE AVAILABLE UNDER THE FOLLOWING PART NUMBERS: 1ST TYPE 20352412-13 FRONT 2ND TYPE 20403742-43 FRONT 1ST TYPE 20352414-15 REAR 2ND TYPE 20429518 REAR 2ND TYPE 20403745 REAR SUBJECT: MOULDING - BODY SIDE REPLACEMENT - 82 OLDS "J" VEHICLES AFFECTED: OLDSMOBILE "J" CAR - S.O.P. THROUGH VIN 304111 WITH OPTION B-84 BODY SIDE MOULDINGS SOME EARLY PRODUCTION OLDSMOBILE "J" CARS (START OF PRODUCTION THROUGH VIN 304111) MAY EXHIBIT A LOOSE BODY SIDE MOULDING CONDITION IN THE FIELD. IF THIS CONDITION IS ENCOUNTERED ALL OF THE BODY SIDE MOULDINGS ON THAT VEHICLE SHOULD BE CHANGED IN ADDITION TO THOSE THAT APPEAR LOOSE. COMPLETE SETS OF BODY SIDE MOULDINGS FOR THESE STYLES ARE AVAILABLE IN KIT-FORM THROUGH GM PARTS DEPARTMENT. SEDAN KITS ARE ORDERED USING PART NUMBER 20423891; COUPES 20423892. TO REPLACE AN ADHESIVE RETAINED BODY SIDE MOULDING PERFORM THE FOLLOWING OPERATION: REMOVAL: 1.WITH A HEAT GUN, APPLY HEAT TO THE MOULDING TO BE REMOVED FROM THE CAR TO SOFTEN THE ADHESIVE. THEN CAREFULLY PEEL THE MOULDING AWAY FROM THE BODY. 2.REMOVE ALL TRACES OF ADHESIVE FROM THE BODY PANELS WITH AN OIL-FREE SOLVENT, SUCH AS NAPTHA OR ALCOHOL. PANELS MUST BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED TO ASSURE PROPER ADHESION OF THE NEW MOULDING TO THE BODY. INSTALLATION: 1.AS A GUIDELINE FOR INSTALLING THE REPLACEMENT MOULDINGS, APPLY A STRIP OF MASKING TAPE ACROSS THE BODY PANELS. 2.IF THE BODY TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 21C (70F), WARM THE BODY PANEL WITH A HEAT GUN OR LAMP. WARMING THE BODY WILL PROMOTE ADHESION OF THE MOULDINGS TO THE BODY. 3.REMOVE THE BACKING FROM THE MOULDING AND CENTRE THE MOULDING ON THE PANEL. ALIGN THE EDGE OF THE MOULDING WITH THE MASKING TAPE (STEP #3). APPLY HEAVY EVEN PRESSURE OVER THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE MOULDING TO ESTABLISH PROPER ADHESION TO THE BODY PANEL. THE ABOVE PROCEDURES MUST BE CAREFULLY AND CORRECTLY FOLLOWED TO ENSURE THE REPLACEMENT MOULDINGS ARE SECURELY RETAINED. TO ENSURE A GOOD REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF ADHESIVE RETAINED MOULDINGS, THE PANEL SURFACE SHOULD BE WARM (21 TO 32C OR 70 TO 90F), CLEAN AND FREE OF ANY WAX OR OILY FILM. THE METHODS FOR ATTACHING LOOSE MOULDING ENDS AND COMPLETELY REMOVED MOULDINGS ARE LISTED BELOW. MOULDING END LOOSE 1.WASH THE AFFECTED AREA WITH SOAP AND WATER AND WIPE DRY. WIPE THE PANEL AND ADHESIVE SIDE MOULDING WITH CLEAN NAPHTHA OR ALCOHOL. IF THE MOULDING HAS PULLED LOOSE FROM THE ADHESIVE BACKING (TAPE REMAINS ON BODY PANEL), DO NOT REMOVE THE TAPE FROM THE BODY. CLEAN THE BACK OF THE MOULDING AND THE TAPE ON THE BODY WITH NAPHTHA OR ALCOHOL AND PROCEED WITH STEP 3. 2.IF NEEDED, APPLY A LENGTH OF MASKING TAPE AS A MOULDING GUIDE. A STRAIGHTEDGE MAY ALSO BE USED. 3.APPLY THE ADHESIVE TO THE BACK OF THE MOULDING AND PRESS IN PLACE. IF LOCTITE 414 ADHESIVE, PART NUMBER 992664 OR EQUIVALENT IS USED, APPLY A CONSTANT PRESSURE TO THE MOULDING FOR 30 SECONDS OR UNTIL A FIRM BOND HAS BEEN MADE. MOULDING COMPLETELY REMOVED 1.WASH THE AFFECTED PANEL AREA WITH SOAP AND WATER AND WIPE DRY. REMOVE ALL TRACES OF THE ADHESIVE FROM THE BODY PANEL AND BACK OF THE MOULDING USING AN OIL-FREE NAPHTHA OR ALCOHOL. 2.MARK THE PROPER ALIGNMENT POSITION OF THE MOULDING WITH A LENGTH OF MASKING TAPE. USE THE ADJACENT MOULDINGS AS A GUIDE, IF APPLICABLE. 3.IF THE BODY IS BELOW 21F (70F) DUE TO SHOP TEMPERATURE OR PRIOR EXPOSURE OF THE VEHICLE TO THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE, WARM THE BODY PANEL WITH A HEAT LAMP OR HEAT GUN BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH STEP 4. 4.APPLY A 3M NEOPRENE FOAM TAPE, PART NUMBER 06380 OR EQUIVALENT TO THE MOULDING. 5.ALIGN THE MOULDING ALONG THE PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED TAPE GUIDELINE AND PRESS FIRMLY IN PLACE. 6.REMOVE THE MASKING TAPE APPLIED IN STEP 2.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
