Circuit Description

When the transmission fluid is cold, the sensor resistance is high. As the transmission fluid warms up, the sensor resistance decreases. This diagnostic monitors the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor circuit. The circuit may be functional but not in the normal operating range. This diagnostic indicates stuck, erratic, intermittent, or skewed values, resulting in reduced system performance.

If the transmission control module (TCM) detects an intermittent voltage or no voltage change in the TFT sensor circuit, then DTC P0710 sets.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

DTC P0710 sets when the following condition occurs:

The voltage of the transmission oil temperature is greater than 2.4 volts or less than 0.1 volt for more than 150 seconds.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • A scan tool can clear the DTC.
    • The PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a non-emission related diagnostic fault occurring.
    • The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the fault no longer exists and the DTC passes.

Test Description

The numbers below refers to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step attempts to repeat the condition that set the DTC.

  2. This step tests the circuit for an open or high resistance.

  3. This step tests the circuit for a short to ground.

3

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  3. Important: Before clearing the DTCs, use the scan tool in order to record the Failure Records for reference. Using the Clear Info function will erase the stored Failure Records from the powertrain control module (PCM).

  4. Record the Failure Records.
  5. Clear the DTC.
  6. Drive the vehicle for at least 15 minutes.
  7. Using a scan tool, observe Trans. Fluid Temp. for rapid fluctuations in temperature.
  8. Record the temperature at the start and end of the trip.

Was the transmission fluid temperature within the specified value?

70-80°C (158-176°F)

Go to Step 8

Go to Step 4

4

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Disconnect the transmission control module (TCM) connector from the TCM.
  3. Disconnect the connector from the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) switch.
  4. Check the resistance of the TFT sensor.

Is the resistance equal to the specified value?

Resistance should be 2.5K ohms at 20°C (68°F) and 0.82K ohms at 50°C (122°F) and 0.325K ohms at 80°C (176°F)

Go to Step 8

Go to Step 5

5

  1. Disconnect the transmission connector at the transmission.
  2. Disconnect the TCM connector.
  3. Test the transmission temperature sensor circuit for an open or high resistance. Refer to Testing for Short to Ground and Wiring Repairs .

Go to Step 11

Go to Step 6

6

  1. Disconnect the transmission connector at the transmission.
  2. Disconnect the TCM connector.
  3. Test the transmission temperature sensor signal circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Testing for Short to Ground and Wiring Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 11

Go to Step 9

7

  1. Remove the transmission oil pan.
  2. Inspect the terminals and internal harness for damage.
  3. Replace the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor if no damage exists. Refer to Control Valve Body Replacement for TFT sensor location.
