Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Engine Left Side

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the engine left side spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the right engine mount strut at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  3. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve from the engine left side valve rocker arm cover.

  4. Object Number: 54369  Size: SH
  5. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  6. Remove the valve rocker arm cover and gasket.
  7. Clean the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection .
  8. Clean the valve rocker arm cover gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and the lower intake manifold.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 54369  Size: SH
  1. Install the valve rocker arm cover gasket into the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Apply sealer GM P/N 12345739 or the equivalent to the notches where the cylinder head and intake manifold meet.
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  7. Install the PCV valve to the engine left side valve rocker arm cover.
  8. Install the right engine mount strut at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  9. Connect the engine left side spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.

Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Engine Right Side

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  2. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Disconnect the engine right side spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  6. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve.
  7. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.

  8. Object Number: 261282  Size: SH
  9. Remove the ignition module bracket with the coils.
  10. Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the engine right side valve rocker arm cover.

  11. Object Number: 60846  Size: SH
  12. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  13. Remove the valve rocker arm cover and gasket.
  14. Clean the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection .
  15. Clean the valve rocker arm cover gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and the lower intake manifold.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 60846  Size: SH
  1. Install the valve rocker arm cover gasket into the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Apply sealer GM P/N 12345739 or the equivalent to the notches where the cylinder head and intake manifold meet.

  6. Install the vacuum hose to the grommet in the engine right side valve rocker arm cover.

  8. Install the ignition coil bracket with coils.
  9. Install the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.

  10. Object Number: 261279  Size: SH
  11. Connect the vacuum hoses from the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve.
  12. Connect the engine right side spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  13. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  14. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  15. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
