Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check for starting and charging?

Go to Step 2

Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Commanded Starter parameter in the PCM data list.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the scan tool display Enabled?

Go to Step 4

Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the CRANK relay click?

Go to Step 8

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the CRANK relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the Engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the CRANK relay coil and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

  1. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the CRANK relay coil and the control circuit of the CRANK relay.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 15

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the park neutral position (PNP) switch.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the Engine OFF.
  4. Connect a 10 amp fused jumper between the CRANK relay coil control circuits of the PNP switch.
  5. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 14

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the CRANK relay.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the CRANK relay switch circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 9

Connect a 30 amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit of the CRANK relay switch circuit and the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid.

Does the engine crank?

Does the fuse in the jumper open?

Test the control circuit of the CRANK relay for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the crank request signal circuit of the PCM for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Inspect the PNP switch for proper operation. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65 - E.
  2. Inspect for poor connection at the PNP switch harness connector. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

IMPORTANT:: Perform the set up procedures for the PCM.

Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
