Setting the Clock for Systems with Automatic Tone Control

Perform the following procedure in order to set the clock for the Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicle UL0, UN0, UP0:

Press and hold HR or MN for two seconds.
Press and hold HR until the correct hour appears.
AM or PM will appear on the display.
Press and hold the MN until the correct minute appears.
The clock may be set with the ignition is ON or OFF.
The clock symbol will appear on the display in the time set mode.

Setting the Radio Data System (RDS) Clock and Information

To set the clock to the time of a station broadcasting Radio Data System (RDS) information, press and hold HR and MN at the same time for two seconds until UPDATED and the clock symbol appear on the display. If the time is not available from the station, NO UPDATE will appear on the display.

Playing the AM-FM Stereo (UN0, UL0, UP0) (Chevrolet-Oldsmobile)

PWR

Press this button to turn the system ON and OFF.

VOL

Turn this Knob clockwise to increase the volume, turn it counterclockwise to decrease the volume.

DISP

Press this button to display the clock with the ignition OFF.

ALTERNATE FREQUENCY (UP0)

This feature allows the radio to switch to a stronger station with the same programming. Press and hold AM-FM for 2 seconds to tune Alternate Frequency on. AF ON will appear on the display. The radio may switch to stronger stations. Press and hold AM-FM again to turn Alternate Frequency OFF. AF OFF will appear on the display. The radio will not switch to other stations.

AUTO VOL (UN0, UL0, UP0)

This system has a feature called Speed-Compensated Volume (SCV). With SCV the audio system adjust automatically to make up for road and wind noise as you drive. Set the volume at the desired level. Press AUTO VOL to adjust the SCV. AVOL will appear on the display. Each time you press AUTO VOL, another volume setting (LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH) will appear on the display. NONE will appear on the display if the radio cannot find out the vehicle speed. As the car sped increases the SCV automatically increases the volume, as necessary, to overcome noise at any particular speed. The volume level should always sound the same as you drive. If you don't want to use SCV, select OFF. Each volume setting allows for more volume compensation at faster vehicle speeds.

Finding a Station

AM-FM

Press this button to switch between AM, FM1, FM2. The display shows your selection.

TUNE

Turn this knob to choose radio stations.

SEEK

Press the right arrow to tune to the next higher station and the left to tune to the next lower station.

PUSH-BUTTONS

The six numbered push-buttons let you return to a set station. You can set up to 18 stations (six AM, six FM1 and six FM2)

Turn the radio ON.
Press AM or FM to select the band.
Tune to the desired station.
Press AUTO TONE to select the equalization that best suits the station selected.
Press and hold one of the six numbered buttons. The radio will produce one beep. Whenever you press that numbered button the station you set will return and the AUTO TONE equalization that you selected will Also be automatically selected for that button.
Repeat the steps for each push-button.

P SCAN

Press and hold one of the arrows for more than two seconds. The radio will produce one beep. Use P SCAN to listen to each of the stations programed for a few seconds. The radio will scan through each of the stations stored on the push-buttons, except those with weak reception. The AUTO TONE setting stored for that push-button will be chosen. Press P SCAN or one of the push-buttons again to stop scanning. SCAN will be displayed whenever the tuner is in the P SCAN mode. The channel number (P1-P6) will appear with the frequency. In FM mode, this function will scan through the current band such as FM1 or FM2.

Setting the Tone

BASS

Press and release the P-TYPE LIST/AUDIO knob until BASS appears on the display. Then turn the Knob clockwise to increase bass and counterclockwise to decrease bass. The display will show the bass level. When you use this control, the radio's AUTO TONE setting will switch to manual and the AUTO TONE display will go blank. To set the tone and speaker controls to the middle position, press and hold the P-TYPE LIST/AUDIO knob when no tone or speaker control is active. The radio will produce one beep and display ALL with the level display in the middle position.

TREBLE

Press and release the P-TYPE LIST/AUDIO knob until TREB appears on the display. Then turn the Knob clockwise to increase treble and counterclockwise to decrease treble. The display will show the treble level. When you use this control, the radio's AUTO TONE setting will switch to manual and the AUTO TONE display will go blank. If a station is weak or noisy you may want to decrease the treble.

AUTO TONE (UN0, UL0, UP0)

This feature allows you to choose preset bass and treble equalization settings designed for ROCK, POP, JAZZ, CLASSIC and COUNTRY stations. TONE and the preset equalization setting will appear on the display when you press AUTO TONE. Each time you press it, another setting will appear on the display. The manual setting allows tone control to return to the BASS and TREB controls. Use PUSH-BUTTONS and AUTO TONE for station presets.

Adjusting the Speakers

BAL

Press and release the P-TYPE LIST/AUDIO knob until BAL appears on the display. Turn the knob clockwise to move the sound to the right speakers an counterclockwise to move the sound to the left speakers. The middle position balances the sound between the speakers. The display will show the speaker balance. To set the control to the middle position, select the control and press and hold the P-TYPE LIST/AUDIO button. The radio will produce one beep and set the display level to the middle position.

FADE

Press and release the P-TYPE LIST/AUDIO knob until FADE appears on the display. Turn the knob clockwise to the front speakers and counterclockwise to move the sound to the rear speakers. The middle position balances the sound between the speakers. The display will show the speaker balance.

Using RDS Mode (UN0, UL0, UP0)

The audio system is equipped with a Radio Data System (RDS). RDS mode gives you many useful new features. With RDS, the radio can:

•	Seek only to stations with the types of programs you want to listen to.

•	Seek to station with traffic announcements

•	Receive announcements concerning local and national emergencies.

•	Receive and display messages from radio stations.

RDS features are only available for use on FM stations which broadcast RDS information. The RDS features of you radio rely upon receiving specific RDS information from these stations. These features will only work when the RDS information is available. In rare cases, a radio station may broadcast incorrect information that will cause the radio features to work improperly. If this happens, please contact the radio station. When you are tuned to an RDS station, the station name will appear on the display, instead of the frequency. Most RDS stations provide there station name, the time of day and Program Type (PTY) for their current programming.

Accessing RDS Mode (UN0, UL0, UP0)

Push the SEEK TYPE button or rotate the P-TYPE LIST/AUDIO knob to display the program type list.
Turn the knob either clockwise or counterclockwise to select a program type. The list is alphabetical.
Push SEEK TYPE button to activate search.

VOL

Turn this knob clockwise to increase volume when RDS interrupts regular play. Turn it counterclockwise to decrease volume.

DISP

Press this knob to recall the RDS station being played.

TRAF

Press this button to receive traffic announcements. If the current radio station does not broadcast traffic announcements, the radio will seek to a station that does. The TRAF icon will flash on the display. When the radio finds a station that broadcasts traffic announcements, it will stop. If no station is found, NO TRAF will appear on the display. When a traffic announcement comes on the tuned radio station, you will hear it, even if the volume is muted or a Cassette is playing. The TRAF icon and TRAFFIC will appear on the display while the traffic announcement plays. If the Cassette was being used, the Cassette will stay in the player and resume play at the point where it stopped.

INFO

If the current station has a message, the INFO icon will appear on the display. Press this button to see the message. If the whole message does not appear on the display, each time you press this button, the next part of the message will appear on the display until the message is completed. Press this button again to see the message again. Once the complete message has been displayed, the INFO icon will disappear from the display until a new message is received.

P-TYPE LIST/AUDIO

Turn this knob clockwise or counterclockwise to select the Program Type (PTY) you want to listen to. TYPE and PTY will appear on the display.

SEEK TYPE

Press this button to go to a station with the last selected PTY. TYPE and the last selected PTY will appear on the display, if it is not already showing. If a station with the selected PTY is not found, the radio will return to the original station and display NONE. If both SEEK TYPE and TRAF are on, the radio will search for station with traffic announcements and the selected PTY.

ALERT!

This type of announcement warn of national or local emergencies. You will not be able to turn OFF alert announcements. ALERT! appears on the display when an alert announcement plays. When an alert announcement comes on the radio station, you will hear it, even if the volume is muted, or the Cassette or compact disc player is playing, play will resume when the message is finished.

Compact Disc and Cassette Operation

Playing a Cassette (UL0, UP0)

The Cassette player is built to work best with Cassettes that are up to 30 to 45 minutes long on each side. Cassettes longer than that are so thin they may not work well in this player. The longer side with the Cassette visible should face to the right. If the ignition is ON, but the radio is OFF, the Cassette can be inserted and will begin playing. A Cassette symbol is displayed whenever a Cassette is being played. If you hear nothing but garbled sound, the Cassette may not be inserted squarely. Press EJT to remove the Cassette and start over. While the Cassette is playing, use the VOL, FADE, BAL, TREB, BASS, and SEEK controls just as you do for the radio. The display will show Cassette and an arrow showing which way the Cassette is being played. If you want to insert a Cassette when the ignition is OFF, first press EJT or DISP.

Playing a Compact Disc (UN0, UP0)

Insert a disc partway into the slot, label side up. The player will pull it in. The disc should begin playing. The display will show the CD symbol. If you want to insert a compact disc with the ignition OFF, first press DISP or EJT. If you are driving on a very rough road or it's very hot, the disc may not play and Err (error) may appear on the display. When the road is smooth or the temperature returns to normal, the compact disc should play. If the disc comes out, it could be that:

•	The disc is upside down.

•	It is dirty, scratched or wet.

•	It is very humid.

PREV (1)

Press this button to go to the beginning of the current selection (or track). If the PREV button is pressed and the current selection has been playing from 3 to 13 seconds for Cassettes and 8 seconds for CDs, it will go back to the beginning of the previous selection (or track). If you press the button more than once, the player will continue moving back through the Cassette or CD. SEEK and a negative number will appear on the display for Cassettes, TRACK and the track number will appear for CDs. A Cassette must have at least 3 seconds of silence between each selection for PREV to work. The sound will mute while seeking.

NEXT (2)

Press this button to go to the next selection on the Cassette or CD. If you press the button more than once, the player will continue moving forward through the Cassette or CD. SEEK and a positive number will appear on the display for Cassettes, TRACK and the track number will appear for CDs. A Cassette must have at least 3 seconds of silence for the NEXT to work. The sound will mute while seeking.

REV (3)

Press this button to reverse the Cassette or CD rapidly. For Compact Disc's if you hold the button for less than 2 seconds to reverse at 6 times the normal playing speed. Press and hold it for more than 2 seconds to reverse at 17 times the normal playing speed. Press it again to return to the playing speed. The radio will play the last selected station while a Cassette reverses. You may select during REV operation by using TUNE, SEEK and P SCAN controls.

FWD (4)

Press this button to advance quickly to another part of the Cassette or CD. For Compact Disc's if you hold the button for less than 2 seconds to forward at 6 times the normal playing speed. Press and hold it for more than 2 seconds to forward at 17 times the normal playing speed. Press the button again to return to the playing speed. The radio will play the last selected station while the Cassette advances. You may select stations du-ring FWD operation by using TUNE, SEEK and P SCAN controls.

SIDE (5)

Press this button to play the other side of the Cassette.

SEEK (5)

Seek >> is the same as Next, and << SEEK is the same as PREV. If the button is held or pressed more than once, the player will continue moving forward or backward through the Cassette or CD. SEEK and a positive number or negative number will appear on the display for Cassettes and TRACK and the track number will appear for CDs.

RDM (6)

Press this button to hear the tracks in random, rather than sequential, order. RDM ON will show on the display. RDM T and the track number will appear on the display when each track starts to play. Press RDM again to turn off random play. RDM OFF will appear on the display.

DISP

Press this button to see how long the current track has been playing. ET and the elapsed time will appear on the display. To changed what is normally shown on the display (track or elapsed time), press the button until you see the display you want, then hold the button for 2 seconds. The radio will produce a beep.

DOLBY® NR symbol

Press this button to reduce background noise. NR ON will appear on the display. Press it again to turn Dolby® OFF. NR OFF will appear on the display.

AM FM

Press this button to play the radio when a Cassette is in the player. The Cassette will stop but remain in the player.

Cassette

With a Cassette in the player and the radio playing, press this button to play a Cassette. Press AM FM to return to the radio when a Cassette is playing. The inactive Cassette will remain safely inside the radio for future playing.

Cassette AUX

With a Cassette in the player and the radio playing, Press this button to play a Cassette. Press AM FM to return to the radio when a Cassette is playing. Press Cassette AUX to switch between the Cassette and compact disc if both are loaded. The inactive Cassette will remain inside the radio for future listening.

EJT

Press this button to remove a Cassette. The radio will play. EJT may be activated with the radio OFF. Cassettes may be loaded with the radio OFF if this button is pressed first.

CLEAN

If this message appears on the display, the Cassette needs to be cleaned. It will still play Cassettes, but you should clean it as soon as possible to prevent damage to the Cassettes and player. After you clean the player, press and hold the eject button (EJT) for five seconds to reset the CLEAN indicator. The radio will display CLEANED to show the indicator was reset.

CAL ERR (UP0)

This message is displayed when the radio has not been calibrated properly to the vehicle.

LOCKED (UP0)

This massage is displayed when the Theftlock® system has locked up due to a loss of power. Refer to Radio Setup .

CHK TAPE (UP0)

Appears on the radio display when:

•	The tape wont play due to an error.

•

The tape is tight and the player can't turn the tape hubs. Remove the tape. Hold the tape with the open end down and try to turn the right hub counterclockwise with a pencil. Turn the tape over and repeat. If the hubs do not turn easily, the tape may be damaged and should not be used in the player. try a new tape to make sure your player is working properly.

•	May be displayed if the tape is broken.

•	May be displayed when the tape is wrapped around the tape head, attempt to get the tape out, and clean out any debris.

Tight/Loose Cassette Sensor Defeat

With the radio OFF and the ignition ON, press and hold the Cassette AUX button to disable the Tight/Loose Cassette sensing feature to enable play of some Cassette head cleaners and portable CD adapters. The radio will display READY and flash the Cassette icon. The Tight/Loose Cassette sensing feature will then be disabled until the next cassette eject.

CD Adapter Kits (UT6)

It is possible to use a portable CD player adapter kit with your Cassette player after activating the bypass feature on your Cassette player. To activate the bypass feature, use the following steps:

Turn the ignition to RUN or ACCESSORY.
Turn the radio OFF.
Press and hold the Cassette AUX button for five seconds. READY will appear on the display for five seconds, indicating the feature is active.
Insert the adapter into the Cassette slot. It will power up the radio and begin playing.

This override routine will remain active until EJT is pressed.

Radio/Audio System Operation Export

Setting the Clock for AM-FM Stereo (UM7)

Perform the following procedure in order to set the clock.

Important: The clock may be set with the ignition ON or OFF.

Press and hold the HR or MIN for two seconds.
Press the HR arrow until the correct hour appears.
Press and hold the MIN arrow until the correct minute appears.

Setting the Clock for all Systems except AM-FM Stereo

Perform the following procedure in order to set the clock.

Press and hold the HR button until the correct hour appears.
Press and hold MIN until the correct minute appears.

There will be a 2 second delay before the clock goes into time-set mode. The colon on the display will blink while in this mode.

Playing the AM-FM Stereo (UM7)

PWR-VOLUME

Press this knob to turn the system ON and OFF. To increase the volume, turn the knob clockwise. Turn it counterclockwise to decrease the volume.

RCL

Press this knob to recall the station being played or to display the clock. Clock display is available with the vehicle OFF.

AM-FM

Press this button to switch between AM, FM1 and FM2. The display shows your selection.

TUNE

Turn this knob in order to choose the radio stations.

SEEK

Press the right arrow to tune to the next higher station and the left arrow to tune to the next lower station. The radio will seek to stations with a strong signal only.

PUSH-BUTTONS

The six numbered push-buttons allow you to return to the desired station. You may set up to 18 stations (6 AM and 6 FM1 and 6 FM2).

Perform the following procedure in order to preset up to 18 stations:

Turn the radio ON.
Press AM-FM to select the band.
Tune to the desired station.
Press and hold one of the six numbered buttons until you hear a beep. Whenever you press that numbered button, the station will return.
Repeat the steps for each push-button.

EQ (Equalizer)

This feature allows you to choose preset bass, treble and mid equalization settings designed for different tastes. Press EQ to select the desired preset equalization setting. Each time you press EQ, another setting will appear on the display. You can set up to six equalization settings by:

Turn the radio on.
Use the TONE button and the SELECT knob to select the desired equalization.
Press and hold EQ for two seconds. SELECT EQ # will appear on the display. The EQ icon will flash.
Press EQ or turn the SELECT knob to select the desired EQ number. Each time you press EQ or turn the SELECT knob, another EQ setting will appear on the display.
Press and hold the EQ button or push the SELECT knob to store the equalization preset. You will hear a beep and EQ SAVED will appear on the display.
Repeat the steps for each EQ setting.

Note that EQ 5 has been programed for use with talk radio, but can be preset to a different tone.

Setting the Tone

BASS

Follow the following steps to set the bass.

Press and release AUDIO repeatedly until BAS appears on the display.
Press and hold the UP arrow to increase the bass. "B" and a positive number will appear on the display.
Press and hold the DOWN arrow to decrease the bass. "B" and a negative number will appear on the display.
"B" and a zero will appear on the display when the bass is set to the middle position.
Release the UP or DOWN arrow when you find the bass level you want or when the maximum or minimum level is reached.

TREBLE

Follow the following steps to set the treble.

Press and release AUDIO repeatedly until TRE appears on the display.
Press and hold the UP arrow to increase the treble. "B" and a positive number will appear on the display.
Press and hold the DOWN arrow to decrease the treble. "B" and a negative number will appear on the display.
"B" and a zero will appear on the display when the treble is set to the middle position.
Release the UP or DOWN arrow when you find the bass level you want or when the maximum or minimum level is reached.
If a station is weak or noisy, you may want to decrease the treble.

Auto Center Function

Follow the following steps to reset the bass, treble and speaker controls.

Select the desired tone control.
Press and hold AUDIO for more than two seconds until you hear a beep.
"B" and a zero or "T" and a zero will appear on the display.

3.1.	To set all the tone and speaker controls to the middle setting.

3.2.	End out of the audio mode.

3.3.	Press and hold AUDIO for more than two seconds until you hear a beep.

3.4.	CEN will appear on the display.

Adjusting the Speakers (UM7)

BALANCE

Press and release AUDIO until BAL appears on the display.
Press and hold the UP arrow to move the sound to the right speakers or the DOWN arrow to move the sound to the left speakers.
"R" and a number will appear on the display when the sound is balanced towards the right speakers, "L" and a number will appear on the display when the sound is balanced towards the left speakers.
"L" and a zero will appear on the display when the sound is balanced between the speakers.
Release the UP or Down arrow when you find the speaker balance you want or when the maximum or minimum level is reached.

Adjusting the Speakers (UT6, U1P, U1Q)

BAL-FADE

This button adjusts balance and fade. To adjust balance:

Press the BAL-FADE button until BAL appears on the display. SELECT will appear on the display to show that the speakers can be adjusted.
Turn the SELECT knob clockwise for the right speaker and counterclockwise for the left speaker. The middle position balances the sound between the speakers.

To adjust FADE:

Press the BAL-FADE button until FAD appears on the display.
Turn the SELECT knob clockwise for the front speaker and counterclockwise for the back speaker. The middle position balances the sound between the speakers.
Press hold this button for two seconds to return both fade and balance to the middle position.

Playing the AM-FM Stereo (UT6, U1P, U1Q) (Pontiac Montana)

Important: This audio system has been calibrated for this vehicle from the factory. If CAL appears on the display it means that the radio has not been configured properly for the vehicle. It must be calibrated to properly work again.

Press this button to turn the system ON and OFF.

VOL

Turn this Knob clockwise to increase the volume, turn it counterclockwise to decrease the volume.

DISP

Press this button to display the clock with the ignition OFF.

Tight/Loose Cassette Sensor Defeat

CD Adapter Kits (UT6)

It is possible to use a portable CD player adapter kit with your Cassette player after activating the bypass feature on your Cassette player. To activate the bypass feature, use the following steps:

Turn the ignition to RUN or ACCESSORY.
Turn the radio OFF.
Press and hold the Cassette AUX button for five seconds. READY will appear on the display for five seconds, indicating the feature is active.
Insert the adapter into the Cassette slot. It will power up the radio and begin playing.

This override routine will remain active until EJT is pressed.

Rear Seat Audio (UK6)

This feature allows rear set passengers to listen to any of the music sources including AM-FM, automatic tone control, Cassettes or CDs. However, the rear seat passengers can only control the music sources that the front seat passengers are not listening to. For example, rear seat passengers may listen to a Cassette or CD through headphones while the driver listen to the radio through the front speakers. The rear seat passengers have control of the volume for each set of headphones. Be aware that the front seat controls always override the rear seat audio controls. The following functions are controlled by the primary radio knob.

POWER-VOL

Push this knob twice to turn the rear seat audio system ON or OFF. ON or OFF will be displayed for five seconds. the rear speakers will be muted when the power is turned on. You may operate the rear seat Audio functions when the primary radio power is OFF if the Ignition is ON.

PWR

Press this button to turn the rear seat audio system ON or OFF. The speakers will be muted when the power is turned ON. You may operate the rear seat audio functions even when the power is OFF.

VOL

Press this knob lightly so it extends. Turn the knob clockwise to increase the volume and counterclockwise to decrease the volume. Push the knob back into its stored position when you're not using it. The upper knob controls the upper headphone and the lower knob controls the lower headphone.

AM-FM

Press this button to switch between AM, FM1 and FM2. The display will show your frequency selection. If the front passengers are already listening to AM-FM, the rear seat audio controller will not switch between bands and cannot change the frequency.

SEEK

Press the up arrow to tune to the next higher station and stay there. Press the down arrow to tune to the next lower station and stay there. The display will show your selection. The sound will mute while seeking. The seek button is inactive if the AM-FM mode on the front radio is in use. If the vehicle is equipped with the AM-FM Stereo with Cassette Tape Player and Equalizer (UT6), while listening to a Cassette, press the arrow to hear the next selection on the tape. Press the down arrow to go back to the previous selection. The SEEK button is inactive if the Cassette mode on the front radio is in use. If the vehicle is equipped with the AM-FM Stereo with Compact Disc Player and Equalizer (U1Q, U1P), while listening to a CD, press the arrow to hear the next selection on the disc. Press the down arrow to go back to the previous selection. The number of the current track selection will appear on the display for five seconds. The SEEK button is inactive if the CD mode on the front radio is in use.

P.SET PROG

The front passengers must be listening to something different for each of these functions to work:

•	Press this button to seek through the preset radio stations set on the primary radio push-button. The display will show your selection.

•	When a Cassette is playing, press this button to go to the other side of the tape.

TAPE CD

With a Cassette in the player and the radio playing, press this button to play a Cassette. Press TAPE CD to switch between the Cassette and the CD if both are loaded. Press AM-FM to return to the radio when a Cassette or CD is playing. The inactive Cassette or CD will remain in the radio for future listening.

Theft-Deterrent Feature RDS Radios

Theftlock®

This is designed to discourage theft of the radio. The feature works automatically by learning a portion of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). if the Radio is moved to a different vehicle, it will not operate and LOCKED will be displayed on RDS radios and LOC on non-RDS radios. With Theftlock® activated, the radio will not operate if stolen.

Audio Steering Wheel Controls (UK3)

If the vehicle has this feature, You can control certain radio and remote playback functions using the buttons on the steering wheel.

VOLUME

Press the UP or DOWN arrow to increase or decrease volume.

PLAY

Press this button to play a Cassette or CD when radio is playing.

MUTE

Press this button to silence the system. Press it again, or any other radio button, to turn on the sound.

SEEK

Press the UP arrow to tune to the next radio station and the DOWN arrow to tune to the next previous radio station. If a Cassette or CD is playing, the player will advance to the next selection with the UP arrow and go to the previous with the DOWN arrow.

PRESET

Press this button to play a station you have programmed on the radio preset buttons. When a Cassette is playing, press this button to change Cassette sides.

AM FM

Press this button to choose AM, FM1 or FM2. If a Cassette or CD is playing, it will stop and the radio will play.
