Important: This message is intended for US dealers and vehicles sold in the United States.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE IS TO TRANSMIT SERVICE BULLETIN 02-07-30-039.
Some customers may comment that the transmission shifts hard, a shudder/chuggle is felt on deceleration or the Service Engine Soon (SES) light is illuminated. A technician may find DTC P0742 set.
A condition has been found with some Transaxle Converter Clutch Pulse Width Modulated Solenoids produced between Julian dates 2217 and 2240, which were used in transaxle assemblies produced between Julian dates 219 and 254. The transaxle Julian date is found on the upper right side of the transaxle identification label.
DO NOT REPLACE THE VALVE BODY AND PUMP ASSEMBLY.
Perform one of the following diagnostics:
• | Test drive the vehicle with the Tech2® installed, Monitor Transmission Release Pressure. The status will be YES until TCC applies and then the display will read NO. If during acceleration the status remains NO and the upshifts are harsh and during deceleration the vehicle shudders during downshifts, suspect the TCC PWM solenoid. |
• | With the Tech2® installed in the vehicle, start the engine. Build the vehicle on the Tech2®. Apply and firmly hold the service brake. Place the transaxle in D4 and command Drive 3 with the Tech2®. If the engine stumbles and/or stalls, suspect the TCC PWM solenoid. |
Replace the TCC PWM solenoid using published procedures for the vehicle being serviced.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
You may wish to inspect the valve you receive from the parts department. Valves which were produced with Julian dates of 2217 through 2240 should not be used. The Julian date is stamped in two places on the valve itself -- on the plastic electrical connector it is shown in the following format: #2XXX, or etched into the side of the solenoid top hat in two groups of 4 numbers. The first is the Julian date, 2XXX, followed by the last four digits of the part number 4974 (i.e. 2219 4974). General Motors' parts warehouses have checked their inventory and purged all suspect stock.
