EARLY DISC BRAKE PAD WEAR (DIAGNOSIS DESCRIBED)

Models Affected: 1988 LEMANS

This bulletin will replace 88-5-16 dated 2/89 which was printed on 1989 paper. This bulletin is being reprinted on 1988 paper.

Some of the subject vehicles may exhibit an early wear condition of the front disc brake pad linings.

Wear occurring to or beyond the wear sensor in less than 10,000 miles may be experienced in some service conditions.

This wear condition may be aggravated by mis-adjusted rear brake shoes. To eliminate this mis-adjustment as a cause of subsequent premature wear of the front brake pad linings, the following adjustment procedure should be followed upon completion of servicing the front brakes for this condition.

1. Release parking brake lever. 2. Raise vehicle on hoist. 3. Remove access plug from rear of brake backing plate. 4. Check clearance (D) between Stop, Parking Brake Lever and Brake Shoe Web, See Figure 1, for both rear brakes "D" should not exceed 3mm (.12 in.). 5. If "D" is greater than 3mm then adjustment is required per step 6-lD. 6. Loosen parking brake cable at equalizer until both lever stops are just touching the brake shoe web. 7. Apply foot brake several times until clicking of adjustment actuator can no longer be heard (adjuster makes multiple clicks for each application).

- Brake pedal must be operated at least 10 times. - When clicking stops, recheck clearance "D" for proper adjustment.

8. Reinsert access plug in backing plate. 9. Check that parking brake lever when fully applied has been raised 5 to 8 from the fully off (down) position. 10. Lower vehicle.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
