THE 1982 EGR CUT-OUT RELAY ON EARLY G AND B CARS COULD BE MOUNTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT MOISTURE CAN INTRUDE THROUGH THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS AND SHORT OUT THE RELAY. IF THE RELAY IS SHORTED OUT, THE EGR VALVE WILL NOT FUNCTION, CAUSING DETONATION AND/OR POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE. SEE ILLUSTRATION. IF THE EGR VALVE IS NOT FUNCTIONING, FOLLOW THE DIAGNOSIS CHART IN THE 1982 CHASSIS SERVICE MANUAL IN SECTION 6E TO VERIFY IF ANOTHER CONDITION EXISTS, RENDERING THE EGR VALVE INOPERATIVE. IF THE RELAY IS SHORTED, REPLACE WITH PART NUMBER 10022616 AND BEND MOUNTING BRACKET SO TERMINALS AND PLUG ARE POINTING DOWN SLIGHTLY.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
