Condition

Some customers may comment on an engine oil leak. Upon investigation, the technician may find engine oil seepage at the rear of the engine, often misdiagnosed as the engine rear main seal.

Cause

Object Number: 1774816 Size: SH
(1)Rear Engine Oil Galley Plugs

The oil galley plug(s) on the rear of the engine block may have been damaged during assembly. This may result in a loss of clamp load allowing the plug(s) to come loose creating an engine oil leak.

Correction

If there is oil seepage at the rear of the engine, remove the engine flywheel to gain access to the oil galley plugs. Refer to SI for Engine Flywheel Replacement. Once the flywheel is removed, inspect the rear oil galley plugs shown in the above illustration (1) for leakage. If leakage is found, replace or reseal oil galley plug(s) as outlined below.

    • To replace a plug(s), install a new plug(s) and tighten.

Tighten
Tighten the new oil galley plug(s) to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

    • Replacement plug(s) come with pre-applied thread sealant, so it is not necessary to install sealant to the threads.
    • To reseal an old plug(s), apply sealant P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) to the threads and tighten.

Tighten
Tighten the old oil galley plug(s) to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).
