Removal Procedure

    Important: In the event of deployment, inspect the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) coil assembly wire for any signs of scorching, melting or other damage due to excessive heat. If there is damage to the coil assembly, replace the coil assembly.

  1. Disable the SIR. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .

  6. Remove the 5 screws (2) from the steering column lower cover (3).
  7. Remove the upper cover (1) and the lower cover (3).
  8. Remove the SIR coil and combination switch electrical connector.
  9. Remove the retaining bands that secure the SIR coil and combination switch wiring harness to the steering column.

  11. Remove the 3 retaining screws and the SIR coil and combination switch (1) from the steering column.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 349630  Size: SH
  1. Install the SIR coil and combination switch (1) to the steering column.
  2. Secure the SIR coil and combination switch with the 3 screws.
  3. Center the SIR coil, if necessary. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering - Off Vehicle .

  4. Object Number: 349638  Size: SH
  5. Install the SIR coil and combination switch electrical connectors.
  6. Secure the SIR coil and combination switch wiring harness to the steering column with the retaining bands.
  7. Install the upper steering column cover (1) and the lower steering column cover (2) to the steering column.
  8. Secure the steering column covers with the 5 screws.
  9. Install the steering wheel to the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
