Use the external leakage check in order to pinpoint the location of the leak. In some cases you can easily locate the leak. Seepage-type leaks may be more difficult to isolate. Use the following method in order to locate the seepage leaks:

  1. Wipe dry the entire power steering system with the engine OFF.
  2. Inspect the fluid level in the pump reservoir.
  3. Add fluid to the reservoir, if necessary. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  4. Start the engine.
  5. Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel in the full turn position longer than 5 seconds, as damage to the steering pump may result.

  6. Have an assistant operate the steering wheel while you search for the seepage. Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times. Do not hold the steering wheel at a stop for any length of time. This can damage the power steering pump
  7. Locate the exact area of the leak.
  8. Repair the leak.
