Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 24319-B Universal
Steering Linkage Remover
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle. Refer to
Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the cotter pin
and the castle nut from the tie rod end.
Important: For ease of adjustment after installation, mark the position of the
tie rod end locknut on the tie rod thread.
- Use the J 24319-B
in
order to separate the tie rod end (4) from the steering knuckle (5).
- Loosen the tie rod end
locknut (3).
- Remove the tie rod end (4) from the tie rod connector sleeve.
- Inspect the tie rod end dust seal for a perforation or excessive
wear.
Replace the seal if you find a perforation or excessive wear.
Installation Procedure
- Install the tie rod end
(5) and the locknut (4) to the tie rod connector sleeve (3).
- Align the marks denoting the position of the tie rod end locknut
with the tie rod thread.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the tie
rod end to the steering knuckle. Secure the tie rod with the castle nut (7).
Tighten
Tighten the tie rod end castle nut to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
- Install the cotter pin (6) to the tie rod end.
Bend the end of the pin following the installation.
Tighten
Tighten the tie rod end locknut (4) to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).
- Inspect for proper toe adjustment. Refer to
Wheel Alignment Measurement
in Tires and Wheels.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly to the vehicle. Refer to
Wheel Installation
in Tires and
Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
