Condition: Owners of some 1983-90 Sunbird models equipped with Isuzu 5-speed manual transaxles may comment about one or more of the following:
1. Transaxle hopping out of gear.
2. Higher than normal shift efforts.
3. Shifter rattle or buzz.
These conditions may be more apparent during cold weather operation.
Cause: Any of these conditions may be the result of the shift boot being to stiff.
Correction: To repair any of the above conditions a new shifter boot should be installed (P/N 22553175). The new shift boot is made of a more pliable material.
If the new boot does not satisfactorily fix the customer concern, consult previous bulletins on these subjects.
Service Parts: The new boot will only back service vehicles which are equipped with a boot identical to the one shown in Figure 1.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
